Is it worth asking my lecturers to look for one extra mark?

Hey Guys;

We just got back our MSc Biomedical Science coursework portfolio mark and after checking it, I was thinking of asking my course leader if it’s possible to find 1% somewhere if they scrape the bottom of the barrel…

Long story short, I got 69%, basically a distinction but not quite there! 😢

Definitely! it could be the difference from getting, for example, a grade 4 and a grade 5. So yes it is worth it, especially being that close

Talk to your Uni - find out what their policy is on remarks.

Hi,

I would say you have nothing to lose and (hopefully) a mark to gain!

Kind regards,

No.

It's a borderline case so will already have been reviewed at least twice.

Step marking (grading only on 2,5 & 8 within each band) avoids this kind of situation but sometimes a 9 will crop up because of the way the final grade is calculated (e.g. if there are multiple elements) and so the final grade would never be changed under those circumstances.
I think you should assume that your "borderline" mark will already have been reviewed during moderation.

Yeah, I'm going to try and hopefully I can do something (simply for pride's sake) but in all honesty, I don't expect much to change. Overall, all my marks this year have varied from 67-70% total (with the exception of one module worth only 15 credits and was effectively based around med-micro, I'm a clinical biochemist and so, effectively I didn't do so well because I was completely out of my depth but it is the course leader's specialism, so I got stuck with it) and so am hoping to leave with a merit overall which I'd be happy with, I was under no delusions I'd leave this course with a distinction as it's officially meant to be taken in two years but we finish it in one.

These are my marks for my portfolio (this is worth accumulatively 50% of my specialist subject), a 45 credit module, I achieved 68% in a poster and a presentation combined, worth a total of 30% and my upcoming exam is worth 20% of my module (coming up Wednesday).

I've done the maths and if I get the bare minimum pass (50%) in the exam, I walk out with 65% total in my subject specialism. In order to get a distinction (which I simply am not getting), I'd need 73% total... and that's just not happening...

It's actually a really solid set of marks - so well done on that - but in order to get a first overall, you need to achieve above 70 on some elements to compensate for any under 70 marks, or hit the higher marks on the more weighted elements.
They won't confirm the final grade until all elements are calculated - and it's that mark that you need to wait for. You could check your course regs to see if it has to be bang on 70 (some universities put the boundary of a 1st/Distinction at 69 or 69.5 for example).
I'm sure you will give it your best shot and it's good that you are realistic about the possible outcomes. All the best with that final exam!
