How many paragraphs do I need in higher English critical essay?

Hello, Higher English is next week and I’m really worried about critical essay. In class we have planned for 4 paragraphs, but I just cannot write that much in 1 hour. Will I be penalised for not having 4 paragraphs, even if my 2/3 are of high quality?

I always write 3 and got 18/20 in my prelim so I would say it’s fine otherwise my teachers would have said.

Hi
In my practices I only ever have time to write out 3 paragraphs excl. intro/conclusion so I get that.
One thing to note is that SQA markers try not to "deduct marks" so to speak and try to mark positively, so if you only do three but to a high quality I think you'll be okay!
And if you're really really worried then try to prepare well for the RUAE and Scottish Text sections to gather more marks there to make up for a loss in Critical Essay. Like if you get 12/20 for CE, that still leaves you with 92% if you aced the rest, you know what I'm trying to say?

Hope this helps a bit and good luck for the exam!
