Leaving masters early - do I pay back immediately

Hello, I started my MA in January but am struggling with my health and need to withdraw. I have a postgraduate loan, which is paid in 3 installments across the year. I have received the first 2 installments, but need to withdraw at this point, and have not finished the course. Will I need to pay back the installments already received (or any part of them) immediately? Or will repayment of these installments be made as they would be if I had finished the course (ie when I earn over the threshold)?

Hi there,

If you decide to withdraw you won't need to repay anything: your payments will be added to your loan balance.

The only way you'll need to repay anything now is if you receive a payment after your withdrawal date: otherwise, you won't need to.

Thanks, Graeme

Hello, is there a link to any formal documentation about this? Looking at the student loan guide, it states that leaving partway through a course means you are not entitled to the full amount loaned, and this classes as overpayment, which you have to pay back immediately. Postgraduate loan section again states overpayments will need to be paid immediately if you leave early. I am extremely unwell at the moment but am frightened to leave because my loan has already been paid to the university and I therefore don't have money available to pay back. I extremely reassured by your answer that I won't have to pay back anything unless I receive further payment after the withdrawal date, however I can't find this information on any formal loan documentation. Is there a link to formal / official documentation about this, just for clarity. Thank you for any advice you can give
