Is anyone staying at Great Dover Street Apartments currently?

As the title goes, I had a few questions about living there, the room I could book, and what the flat numbers mean. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

not living there currently but did last year so might still be able to help :smile:

firstly the flat number - since I'm not there anymore I'll use mine as an example, G06-074C. G I think was just because it was GDSA, 06 is the block number, 074 is the flat and then C is the room within the flat. All the blocks are labelled from the outside and then there were signs next to the lifts and on every floor that told you what floor each flat number was in :smile:

as for the room you can book, unless they've changed it, there were 2 options: a standard ensuite (which most rooms were) and a slightly larger ensuite which, from what I could tell, was just a bit bigger, usually on the top floor and had a bigger window.

happy to answer any other questions you have :smile:

Hello, thank you so much for replying! I was wondering which of these numbers would indicate which floor I'm gonna be on, for example if my apartment number is G09-115A, will I be able to tell which floor it is on? Also with the ensuite, I was only able to see options for a 40 week contract, however on the KCL website they've said there is a 48 week contract too, so do they rooms differ for each of these or can you upgrade,,, what is the system here?

Unfortunately I don’t think flat number can exactly tell you which floor you’re on because they just number them starting from the first flat in the first block I think my flat was on the 6th floor (now the 5th floor because at the end of the year they randomly changed it to start from 0 for some reason) and there are generally 2 flats per floor and each block had 7 floors (it may be slightly different for block 9/10 since I think they have the bigger rooms in). But going by that logic, my flat was 74, 6th floor in 6th block so 6x6 = 36, times by 2 flats per floor = 74. Might be able to work it out that way, or at least have an idea of higher or lower floors 😅

As far as I’m aware the rooms don’t differ depending on your contract length it’s just how long you stay there, but I could be wrong - I just remember picking a room and not necessarily the contract length. But I think if you wanted/needed to stay for longer, you are probably able to talk to the accommodation team over email (before or after you move in, I’m not sure) to get it extended - I had a friend who did that so they could stay over the summer, though they have certain circumstances regarding their home life so I’m not sure how much that factors in.

Ps. Bit of a random q, but is your username a Stray Kids reference by any chance?

Omg that is a lot of maths icl, I actually have booked the 10th block on a whim (had no idea it had the bigger rooms actually haha) but I don't think I would really care about the floor, just the direction in which it faces because I don't want the window to just show me garbage or whatever haha ;-;
Oh so if you did do the 40 week contract, how did you manage the rest of the weeks? Were the rest of it which is late June to mid September just holidays? I was worried about where I'd stay if I end up doing an internship or smth similar to that
I was looking at the KCL photos and was wondering how much storage space the rooms have because as an international student, it wouldn't be possible for me to stuff a ton of clothes and books and stuff in a tight space ;-;
I have a couple of more questions, would it be fine if I dm-ed you or just asked you here, whatever is more convenient to you?
Ps, Yes, I was listening to Gods Menu when I made this account and I couldn't think of anything else so here we are lolol,,, I mainly just listen to their title tracks actually,,, are you a stray kids fan? :biggrin:

ahh yeah, so which direction you'll face depends on what side of the hallway your room is on which is kinda a when-you-get-there discovery, but you'll either face out onto Great Dover Street over the road and the other houses (has beautiful sunsets in the autumn and summer) and the road isn't too loud in my experience (at least no more than any other accommodation), or you'll face inwards into the courtyard so you'll see the other blocks, the seating and study pods and the trees, which is also nicely lit up with string lights on a night. So definitely not garbage either way :smile:

Yeah, so 40 week contract is September to mid-June but you can keep everything in your room/stay over the Christmas and Easter holidays. If you do end up needing a room for June-September, you might be able to extend your contract as I mentioned before or lots of times I see people on here sharing that they have rooms for longer contracts that they're not using and you can move in there (you have to pay the rent and stuff for the time you're there ofc). If it's for an internship though, I'd definitely say it would be something you could speak to the accommodation team about and see if they can facilitate something since it's uni-related

I won't lie, storage is not great. I had a suitcase, a backpack and a gym bag for my stuff and that was it lol. From my experience you had a single wardrobe, 3 drawers in your desk and a few cupboards above the desk (I think one with doors and one without). There was space between the desk and the wall though so you could probably fit a small standalone shelving unit in there or something if you needed extra space

I am indeed a Stray Kids fan!! :biggrin: been so for maybe...yikes...two, three years or something? 0-0 (weirds me out sometimes how fast time passes lol). K-pop isn't my biggest genre (I'm a rock/metal listener mainly) but it's definitely up there, and SKZ are my ults :smile:

And sure, you can definitely dm me! happy to help any way I can :smile:

OMG NO WAY there are STUDY PODS? that's so damn cool wow,,, how many people can sit in there at a time? Thank god, I was so worried ill be unlucky person and will have a stinky room haha

Can you tell me from when to when these two holidays are? Their academic calendar site is honestly very confusing, I wish they had a pdf or smth ;-; But thank you so much!

Additionally, do you think the staff are delayed at responses or rude or smth? Like ik that's why KCL's student satisfaction rate is super bad but I've messaged them twice and got a reply within like two days so far so I think they're pretty good? Is the situation as bad as they say?

Okay so the storage situation is horrible T-T idk how ill manage icl. I heard there was space under your bed, didn't you have that space over there?

OMG you listen to rock that is so cool,,, I mainly listen to ggs like newjeans, RV and twice but I think straykidz are honestly my fav bg rn

YEAH! They put them in shortly after I moved in, like 4 of them maybe? They’ve got like booth bench things, a table and plug sockets in, and they fit about 4 people at a time :smile: They’re a pretty good way of being able to study ‘outside’ but I will say they’re a bit cold and the internet doesn’t run as fast in there 😅

oh yeah they make the academic calendar so confusing 😭 so for Christmas, teaching will end the 6th of December but you might have coursework due after that, and holiday will officially (so no deadlines or anything) be from 13th December to 6th January. Then you might have assessments the first week back in January and then teaching will start again on the 13th.

For Easter, teaching will finish 28th March and then there are 3 weeks of official holiday and then you’ll be in exam season, so you might have a few extra weeks off - exams run throughout the very last days of April up until the end of May/early June, and so how much you have off will depend on how many exams you have and when they are (which will be sent out to you end of March)

I don’t think staff on the whole are rude or anything, sometimes there are issues (we’ve had several problems with my exams and timetable this year for instance) but generally the admin teams try and get it sorted and respond pretty quickly. Lecturers however do not always reply to emails 😭 and I’ve only met my personal tutor once the entire time (tho most of my friends have much more engaged tutors). It kinda depends on who you’re emailing and why - admin are generally good, most professors respond if you’re asking for help with something (there’s the occasional bad professor but I think that happens everywhere). I honestly don’t think it’s as bad as people make out tho 😅

Personally I didn’t have under-bed storage space but I don’t know if that varies between rooms tbf, and I think they changed a few things this year so it’s possible they do now :smile:

Hey, could you please share your opinion on the wet rooms at GDSA since uve lived there. Are they as bad as they seem or are they manageable? Do they get super moist and mouldy?

IM SO SORRY I forgot to reply to this for some reason ;-;

AH I guess they must be a good change of scenary cuz the rooms are so small. BUT I do have to say the desks are massive in there so they'll be extremely good for studying. I'm worried the lighting wont be good though so I guess table lamps will have to come. ALSO do the rooms have full length mirrors or you have to get them yourself?

I also wanted to ask about what the library situation is like at Kings? Like are some of them 24/7 libraries? I'd assume that since I will be staying at GDSA it'd be better for me to visit the library at Guy's campus if I'm not wrong?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS you're a lifesaver omg,,, are there only two exam periods in the whole year? I thought there were more in August, or is that from 2nd year onwards? On the KCL website it says there are three exam periods so I was confused icl... and if there are no exams, you're just allowed to go home?

AH is your personal tutor someone who teaches you too or are they just like an administrative figure? And thank you! This is very helpful to know. KCL has climbed up the ranks in terms of like student satisfaction and stuff so that's good too! Thank you for sharing your experience :3

Heyy I was just wondering if you remember what flats were on what floor for G06? Like was it 73+74 on your floor and 71+72 on the floor below?x

Can you please tell me the colour of the walls most rooms have? Also, what colours were the doors? I saw they were yellow 😭 but I heard some have been painted/ refurbished or something. Have you seen a refurbished room?
