DSA and evidence

Hi!
I’m currently a university student and I am looking into getting DSA for my dyspraxia. However, I was diagnosed in 2009 fairly informally by a gp and ot team so I have a lack of official paperwork. I was wondering if anyone here can give me advice on how to get sufficient evidence as my uni hasn’t been much help.
Thanks!

Hey! So you should be able to go to a gp and ask them to write a letter about how you've been diagnosed and how it impacts you daily. Sadly, a lot of GPs charge for this (Mine charged about £20 i think but it was worth it to ensure the DSA). It varies practice to practice but most GPs should do it for you if you have it on your NHS record that you have it

Hi,

Do you have the NHS app? I’m not sure if it will go back to 2009 but it might be worth checking before going to the GP to get a letter of them, which might charge you £20 or more.

I was in a similar position with my dyslexia diagnosis, from 2006, which the paperwork has completely vanished but I was able to get the same support from DSA with my ADHD diagnosis which I had the paperwork for.

A lot of conditions such mental health, dyslexia and ADHD will get the same support from DSA, so if you have paperwork for any other condition, it could be worth also submitting that as well, especially if your having troubles accessing your dyspraxia paperwork.

Have you spoken to the wellbeing or disability team at your university? They may also be able to support you with your application.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I received assistant technology such as recording device, microphone, printer, money towards laptop, and ink credits. I also had specialist software and a mentor.

There might be some other bits that I cannot remember, but they went through everything during my needs assessment. It took about 6-8 weeks after the assessment to receive my equipment

Hi there, does anyone know if DSA can put money towards accommodation.. I’m a wheelchair user, living in London going to study at UCL, but commuting would be impractical for numerous reasons. Having said that UCL accommodation prices are abhorrent, so I was curious as to whether the DSA could allocate some funding towards it (I have my needs assessment in just over 2 weeks).

Yes, but only if you are in private accommodation and you are incurring extra costs because of your disability. If its university owned accommodation then they are expected to make sure a disabled student isn't disadvantaged and they may do this by offering a subsidy to bring the cost of a bigger room down to a comparable standard room if you need the bigger room solely because of disability. Hope that makes sense.
