Seeking Guidance: Preparing for a Written Policy Exercise

Hi all,

I've recently applied for a HEO Policy Advisor position at the Department for Transport. Part of the application process involves completing a written policy exercise.

In this exercise, I'll have 75 minutes to demonstrate my drafting skills and ability to provide recommendations in line with the policy function of advising senior leaders.

Drawing from previous public sector graduate schemes, I anticipate that this will involve analysing multiple information sources and crafting well-informed responses for a senior stakeholder.

Given this, I'm reaching out to gather insights on what to expect and how best to prepare. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I've attached the role profile.

What were you expecting?

You seem to know what it's about, not like you can prepare for an assessment when you don't know what the topic is.

Perhaps write some briefs under exam conditions on:

Smart motorways

Great British Rail

Electric car infrastructure

Additional runway at Heathrow or Gatwick

HS2

Then sent to your MP to mark and provide feedback.
