cancelling attending uni on results day??

for context, i am a year 13 student who has applied for university to study pharmacy, i’ve picked my firm and insurance choices.

my dream is dentistry, however i didn’t have the predicted grades to apply for it, so i didn’t. the aim of course is to get the grades for dentistry and on results day, tell my unis i am not attending.

is this something that id actually possible? especially because if (god forbid) i don’t get the grades i’ll still be going for pharmacy, and so i would need accommodation and student finance sorted by time i start.

i’m just curious if anyone has done similar/ if you’re able to cancel accommodation and loans and stuff. i really have no idea how this works.

thanks
Yes, you aren't going to be forced to go to uni. You just need to contact them to advise them that you have met the conditions of your offer but decided you will not be attending in the fall after all. You don't need to give a reason or anything.

For SFE funding you need to inform SFE ASAP so they can cancel the application and don't start paying the money out to your uni. It's your responsibility to do that, not the universities, and if you don't and they start paying it then it will create a lot more problems down the line and may use up some of your funding entitlement.

The trickier part will be accommodation related issues. If you've already signed the contract you will need to check your accommodation contract and see what it says for breaking the contract early. You may need to find someone to replace you in halls or pay out the remainder of the contract yourself for example. If you haven't signed the contract yet you will need to notify them, you will probably lose the deposit as a result though.

I would suggest avoiding signing any accommodation contracts in the meantime if you plan to not take up the place in the fall. Realistically I'd probably have suggested you just withdraw from all your options currently, speak with SFE to cancel the application now, and then take a gap year regardless and either apply for dentistry or reapply for pharmacy to avoid potentially losing a good chunk of money in the deposit for your accommodation.
