Changing Course after difficult first year

Hi guys, I currently study Electronic and Software Engineering at Aberdeen. Initially I had no plans to study this at all but thought it was a good course when I saw it in clearing in 2022. Throughout the first year, I really didn't bother with the course and eventually got into the mindset that I'll just do everything through resits. That didn't happen. Completely my fault I know. Throughout the entire summer of 2023 I wasn't even planning on going back to uni because of how much I disliked the course, city and homesickness. But when I checked my emails they said I could resit the 1st year. And now I am back to where I am in summer 2023, failing and wanting to do resits. I already know I've pretty much wasted a year and I wanted to change course to anything related to Computer Science/Cybersecurity but am I too late? Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks

What A level / SQA etc grades have you got and which Uni subject are you now interested in?

Just be aware that a) unfortunately, a repeatedly failed 1st year means that many other Universities will not be interested in you for any other course and b) having used up 2 years of funding, this may mean you wont get additional funding to complete all years of a new degree course.

5 A's at Higher in Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science
BBC at Advanced Higher in Biology, Chemistry and Maths respectively.

I'm interested in anything related to Computer Science as that's the only parts of my course I enjoy. I've passed my Software Engineering side of modules and am able to fund my self if needed

Do you want to stay in Scotland, or are you looking wider than that?

Want to stay in Scotland. Preferably Glasgow but I've already emailed Glasgow Caledonian to see if they are still open to applications for their Cyber Security and Networks course but they said it was closed and I doubt that course will be going into clearing.

Hi, this is the University of Aberdeen rep account. Thank you for sharing your story and I'm sorry to hear you've been struggling through this year again, it seems like a rough time. In case you're not in contact with them already I would really recommend getting in contact with the student support team who will be able to give you some advice and let you know routes forward for you for both resits and possibly changing course with us. Their email is [email protected] and they can arrange in person appointments with you if that helps, they have more information here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/students/support/student-advice-support-office.php

I sincerely hope this helps you in your current circumstances as they are the best team to get you some support and guidance on taking any steps to transfer into a different course. If you have any questions at all please just let me know.

I'm not sure if anyone on site here is going to be able to give you a definite answer on this unfortunately. I would encourage you to get in contact with whoever you've been in contact with about resits so they can best direct you to a team that will be able to advise about changing course. I will say that at this stage it might not be possible but that would be the best next step for you to take. All the best with both that and your resits!
