Help! Nottingham uni or Cardiff Uni

It's nearing study leave and I think it's a good time to choose my insurance choice: however, I'm stuck between Cardiff and Nottingham for Architectural Engineering.

- I really enjoy Cardiff's location
- Nottingham is higher-rated

All I need is your guys' opinions, thank you for your help

Funnily enough I found myself in a similar position two months ago but for computer science and with uni of liverpool thrown in there as well😅

I can't tell you what to pick but you could ask yourself some of these questions that helped me eventually choose:

1.

When looking at the course content, which one interests you more?

2.

If the course content is about the same, does either have a prefered method of delivery (online, physical or hybrid?) or assessment (finals, course work, group or individual projects?)

3.

Safety of the city and campus. (I can tell you from my research it seems Cardiff based on rankings has less crime rates but these can be subjective sometimes so see if you find anything that I might've missed )

4.

Activites around the city or wider region that interests you (like bars and clubs, parks, libraries, historical tours? really anything that you're into see if the location offers it)

5.

offers to do insustrial years or connections with companies for internships and jobs after graduction

And this is just my feeling but I would say don't look too much into repuations as they can be a bit elitist sometimes. But keep in mind reputation can help with internships and can indicate how well the job market might respond to you after graduation.

Best of luck with your decision! I hope this helped a bit.

Hi @Jcds,

Congratulations on getting an offer from the University of Nottingham!

The best way to decide which university to go to = 'Open days'!

They help you answer any questions you have there and then.

University:

Accommodation (on/off campus, catered/non-catered)

Course structure (placement opportunities, study abroad opportunities)

Lecturers (Ask them questions about the course, see if they're style of teaching suits you, assessment styles)

Fellow students opinions (get a peak behind the curtain on what current students think of the Uni/course)

Clubs and societies (Over 100 at the university, and can even make your own if none take your fancy!

Location:

Transport links (Nottingham has trams, buses and trains to take you anywhere!)

Social life (Nottingham has something for everyone, drinking/non-drinking activities)

Environment (Wollaton park is only a stone throw away from University Park campus)

Here's the link to the University open day website :UoN open days 2024

Hope this helps, any questions just reply to this message!
Good luck with your decision!

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offers! You've already been given some really great advice and things to think about in the posts above. I won't add to them but I will give some resources on getting more information to help you make your choice.

Firstly, you can chat with current students through our https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/chat-to-our-students

You can get more insight into the specific modules that you could study here

You can access blogs that I have written here on student life and resources to boost your employability

Cardiff is widely regarded as one of the friendliest cities in the UK, which I stand by

From Cardiff, there are regular train services to the rest of the country, affordable coaches and nearby access to Cardiff and Bristol airports.

The engineering campus is located in the Queens building which is right in the city centre!

In all transparency, the biggest downside to Cardiff is the rain.

I hope that gives you some insight into resources to help you make your choice! Please let me know if you have any further questions

All the best,
Jaz - Cardiff student rep
