Medicine Extracurriculars

Hi, I am currently in S3. I am looking for work experience but I can't find much as I am under 16. I was thinking of volunteering in a care home, would this help my personal statement. Do I need to do DofE, my school doesn't run this so I would have to do it out of school. Has anyone done the music awards? I was also looking for advice for Advanced higher subjects. For higher I will take maths, English and 3 sciences but there's only 3 Ad. Highers subjects and 3 sciences could be quite challenging! I would really appreciate any suggestions!!

Hi,
Dofe isn’t a necessity. It’s to show your transferable skills of commitment, resilience, survival skills etc. But it’s fun, and If you want to go for it go for it. You would probably have to do it outside of school, look up dofe ‘open expeditions’.
Medicine certainly needs people who can demonstrate those but won’t offer you lower or immediate entry for it.

Do check your desired medical schools entry requirements to see which subjects they want.

Volunteering in a care home is a great thing to do for work experience as it shows your experience of working with people in a healthcare setting.

For advanced higher subjects, choose something you will do well at and actually enjoy. Scottish unis want Chemistry but Biology is optional. You also don’t have to do 3 advanced highers and could crash a higher subject instead of a third. You still have a while so maybe just find out what you enjoy for Nat 5/ highers first.
