Southampton vs Sheffield Computer Science

I have got offers from both since I do 4 a levels i got an offer from Sheffield AAA or AABB with As being in math and physics and Bs in comp sci and furth math whereas Southampton is A*AA which i am not sure if i will get that. Both unis seem to be pretty similar so I am not sure on what to pick and what else should I consider.

Have you already decided your insurance? If not I would put Sheffield as an insurance and if on results day you decide you would rather go to Sheffied it's possible to reject your firm for your insurance!

This is not true.

If your firm choice accepts you, your insurance choice automatically gets removed and you won't go there. The only way to go there would be to decline your place at your firm and then apply to your insurance in clearing (if they're in clearing).

Hi @maxusha ,

I'm Joshua, and I've just finished my second year of CompSci at Southampton.

Firstly, congratulations on your offers!

Choosing between universities can always be tough, but here is what I'd recommend:

Open days: have you come to see both universities at open days? Open days are a great way to get a feel for what life could be like at that Uni, and what the course and facilities are like too. Here you can see our upcoming open days

Course content: I'd recommend comparing the courses' contents, as they might differ between the two. Here are the first year modules for southampton, and here are the first year modules for Sheffield.

Chat to the current students! Both Southampton and Sheffield will have forums here on the student room where you can ask more questions, and find out what other students like me think.

University rankings: rankings can give you a general idea about the performance of a university, but do not form a complete opinion based on them! Also, in the Complete University Guide Sheffield and southampton are very close.

I've really enjoyed my time at Southampton so far, its a great uni with great people and facilities, a nice location too. The course has been tough and frustrating at times, but I've also learnt and enjoyed so much over the past 2 years.

If you have any questions about Southampton or CompSci at Southampton I'll do my best to help 😀

Hello,

Congratulations on your offers!

I am a student at the University of Sheffield and have just finished my second year studying Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and I hope I can help you out!

Sheffield has state of the art facilities with lecturers undertaking high level research in the Computer Science field. The academic support offered is incredibly helpful as your learning will be supported by labs or tutorials that are taught by PhD students in smaller class sizes so you can ask questions.

Our student union has been ranked no1 in the country for several years running now. This means that there is lots of support offered in terms of activities in societies and sports, financial support and careers advice.

The city is also incredibly student friendly with independent shops and cafes that offer student discount and with a lower cost of living than the national average, Sheffield can be more affordable than other cities.

If you have any more questions, just let me know!

Good luck,
Jivanthika

Smarter to put Southampton as ur firm, Sheffield as ur insurance. Southampton graduates make up a large amount of software engineers of companies that I went to so far. The course is well structured, and will guarantee you a job if you take it seriously
