what is his game?

me and this guy from my uni get along really well. we have similar interests, on the same course, same humour and views, never run out of stuff to say and genuinely enjoy each other's company. we even live in the same area and got the train together. he asked me to hang out in december, just me and him and we got food in our local mall and went to the park. and then 2 months later i ask him to hang out together to do the trip for 1 of our modules and we had a good time going canary wharf, the DLR and the farm etc.
then he didnt show up for the rest of uni after reading week coz he said he is going through something and that is totally valid i accept that.
he didnt show up for the rest of uni (we finished in april) and i messaged him asking if he was ok, if he needs any help catching up and if he wanted to meetup (tbf that was a bit stupid bcoz we have assignments to do and **** but yk). and then he left me on delivered. i thought ok thats fine, he is still going through his rough patch probs and can't talk about it and he is pretty reserved and introverted and i am kinda extrovertish so he isnt exactly gonna share it. but then 1 week later and the following weeks he is putting stuff up on his insta story and he even posts. and i be a good friend and view it and like his post for support but dont say anything else to him.
on the 3rd week since being left on delivered (may 4th) i posted on my own story but my private story (close friends list) to which naturally he is on it. and he views it. he has seen it. which was surprising coz all the other times i did it he didnt and yet now he has.
sooo idk i am thinking of messaging him again after my holiday abroad and assignments being over. but just am very confused. i mean yes, he has always been a bad communicator and not the best at telling me things, he is a very private person etc. it has happened before with the whole not responding for weeks on end etc but this time is different. i have a feeling he has dropped out but idk.
