Having guests in your uni room

What are the rules on having guests in your uni room? Do they have to show ID or just sign their name?

Hi James Ede,

This very much depends on your university and their accommodation rules, so I’d suggest you have a look on their website.

At Exeter, no more than four guests can stay in a shared accommodation at a time, and you must also email the accommodation team to confirm it. But it varies on the uni, so double check it for sure!

Hiya!

As someone has already said, this particular rule does depend on the university and the accommodation building itself!

I live in a studio flat, in a building that is student accommodation but not strictly De Montfort University only. I only have to sign guests in, if they stay for the night and no identification is needed but I have to sign them in and take responsibility for them.

If you are interested to know the rules for a particular accommodation I would presume this could be stated somewhere on the website, it should definitely be stated somewhere on the tenancy / contract agreement and if not I am sure you can always communicate to the relevant accommodation team and they will be happy to help.

Great question!

Like others have said, it does depend on the rules of your university accommodation. Some universities may not allow guests to stay and some might do. However, some universities may have guest accommodation, like us for example, so it is just worth raising that question with the accommodation team!

Hi @James Ede,

This will depend on which university you're at. Here at UCLan for guests to stay over in our student accommodation, students will need to attend their residences office and obtain a guest pass by getting signatures from their flatmates so they agree.

You can always reach out to the accommodation team who will be able to provide more information.

Hi there 👋,

It completely depends on your university accommodation.

If you check your university accommodation contract for that year there is most likely a clause in it that suggests what happens if you have a guest over. Keep in note that some accommodation teams have rules set in place for how long guests can stay etc.

Another thing to consider is letting your flatmates know you have a guest coming over! After all, you are sharing a communal space with them. This way everyone feels welcome!
