Access HE

Has anyone got any access HE success stories? I’m starting in September and need some motivation

I do! I did an Access to HE course and then got into the University of Cambridge - I'm a few weeks away from graduating now. I really enjoyed it to be honest - it isn't as intense or rigorous as A levels but it gives a nice breadth and I would say it prepares you fairly well for university (although you might want to do some extra work on the side specifically related to the course you're doing)

Wow that’s amazing well done! What course did you do? And what work did you do on the side of you don’t mind me asking, my GCSEs weren’t the best so I’m trying to build a good personal statement

I'm currently doing the access course in Humanities and I have an offer to study at Cambridge! Great things can arise from studying the course.

I did Humanities and I'm now studying English. I took a pretty substantial break after school, so all the extracurricular work I did was to prove that a) I am still capable of study and b) I'm super dedicated to my course. I mainly just read tons of books and thought about it all a lot - which defo helped for the interview. My advice would be to email the unis you are interested in and ask their advice on what they're looking for, if it isn't easily available online.

I’m not a success story yet, but I hope to be! 😆

I’m just coming to the end of my Access to Science (Biology/Chemistry) and I have an offer to study dietetics at Nottingham. I got offers from all 5 of my UCAS applications.

I’m a very mature student (39) and hadn’t done any formal education in 20 years so was so scared to start my Access bug it’s been a great experience. I have all distinctions so far which I was not expecting to achieve.

I’m starting in September too - still deciding between the Healthcare and General Science pathways though. I’m 31 and wanting to go on and study Midwifery after 8 years working in HR

Hi there, did an access to HE course in science 3 years ago, got all distinctions and I’m now about to graduate as a Diagnostic Radiographer from Exeter.

Hello there! I am 19 currently, I did A levels in 2023 and failed them dramatically due to mental health issues and unfortunately didn’t receive much support for this during the time. I digged myself up about it during results day, and when I mean I failed, I failed big time! I got EUU - so you can imagine the horror and disappointment. I ended up circling around redoing my a levels, however, taking Biology, Chemistry and Law, it wasn’t personally something I wanted to do as I had little to no interest in these subjects. However, I stumbled across the HE Access course in Humanities & Social sciences and I ended up throughly enjoying this course and decided that psychology is my passion. I was naive at first and a bit skeptical because I didn’t think it would be able to get into Uni with it, but I was totally wrong! Now I have a place to study Psychology at Winchester University which was my first choice uni from the start! Hallelujah ! My best advice is put all your effort into your assignments, they aren’t as difficult as the A-Level exam in procedure, but you need to keep on top of it! Otherwise the sky is your limit with this course and you can get into the most prestigious universities out there! Never let go 🙂

Hello! I've taught on Access to HE for over 10 years, largely Nursing and Midwifery, but have done the social sciences too.

For 23-24 only 2 out of 105 or so students have received offers for University, the two that didn't applied for the very competitive area of dentistry, but will get a place in 25/26 i'm sure.

I am delighted that many if my former students email me to let me know how well they have done. About 6 or so a year do this and several have got a 1st in their degree, and some do a Masters afterwards. The key things they highlight are that Access was great for their confidence and also taught them good academic skills to progress.

I got 45 distinctions and after a bitter rejection from Cambridge, I did get offers from Birmingham, Leicester and UCL!

I've finished my Access (Radiography) course, I have a conditional offer for my first choice uni. I exceeded my offer so it's just a waiting game really for my place to be confirmed.
My friend did her Access to Midwifery 9ish years ago, had multiple uni offers and is now an incredible midwife.
