Should I apply to Cambridge for the Design course?

Hi everyone! I'm a year 12 student studying maths, physics, DT, and AS Further maths. I'm really interested in applying for the Design course at Cambridge because I want to do something that's based around design, engineering and architecture - but mainly design engineering as that's what I'm applying for at other unis
There are a few problems though:
- My end of year 12 grades are terrible: A*BCC in DT, maths, physics, further maths (in that order). I have September mocks in year 13 to make up for it, but even still, the highest I could probably get is A*AA (I want to say A*A*A but let's not get our hopes up)
- My GCSEs were pretty average: 9988877765
- I didn't do GCSE Art and I'm not good at drawing so creating a portfolio would be really difficult for me (i've made a separate discussion about this) and it probably won't be as good as most people's because I'm sure almost everyone applying would've done gcse art. I'll have to start learning how to draw from scratch..
- I don't have any experience or supercurriculars based around architecture - everything that I've done is basically on engineering
These are the supercurriculars that I've done:
- UK Space Design Competition for 3 years: My work was mostly engineering based (like food production systems etc) but I used a lot of CAD and for one of the years i designed an art gallery
- I haven't done these yet but I'm going to do work experience at a design agency, a structural/design engineering firm, and also at Imperial College for a materials science work exp programme
- virtual work experience on engineering

Do you think it's worth applying for the Design course at Cambridge or should I just give up?

(Also can anyone recommend any architecture/design based supercurriculars please?)

So did apply to designtripos eventually?

Grade-wise I wouldn't recommend you to apply Cambridge. Although I'm not sure about the grade requirements, A*AA sounds a bit low. Most students who apply to Cambridge will have at least predicted of A*A*AA or A*A*A*. If you still feel like you will have a very strong personal statement and some sort of above decent portfolio (I'm assuming you will have to send one) then you might have a chance.
However, my personal opinion is do apply. Don't forget that you get to apply 5 universities through UCAS. Whether you do get an offer or not, applying to the dream university won't leave behind regrets. If you get in then yay, if you don't you get to know your limits but still without regrets.

Yeah I feel like I need to be a bit realistic..
But let’s say if I did end up getting predicted A*AA, and my portfolio is average (probably below average because I don’t really have experience in drawing) but my personal statement is really good, would you say I’d still have a chance even if I’m barely hitting the requirements? I don’t really wanna apply just for the fun of it because, as you said, I can only apply to 5 unis so I guess I gotta choose wisely

To be real honest and realistic no.
It's a design course. If you don't have much experience in drawing and designing what is you personal statement going to be about? How will the admission officer actually know that you have an ability to study in Cambridge?
Like you saying you will have a "below average" portfolio and a really good personal statement kinda contradicts each other. Normally best pieces in the portfolio are often mentioned in the personal statement to express ideas you have, skills you have, and so why Cambridge must select you.
Even if we say you were very lucky and receive an offer for an interview (as 80%ish people get invited) what will you talk about? Of course the professors will have questions but still they do ask about something mentioned in your personal statement which for design course could be multiple questions.
Sorry if it sounded harsh and YES THIS IS MY OWN OPINION I MAY BE WRONG, but I think the best chance is to work on your personal statement during summer, do some projects you could add in you portfolio AND mention in you personal statement and work on you studies to reach A*A*A.

Completely agree with anon 1. I’m an offer holder for entry this year and believe me…the competition was intense. I have a friend who applied with 5A*s (3 already done!!), an absolutely banging portfolio (saw it myself) and 9/10 for both of his interviews get pooled(basically rejected)… I personally applied to architectural programs at other unis, with UCL being the exception as I applied to K103 and KH11, which is a course similar to design at Cam. I was able to obtain offers at all my other unis so it is definitely possible to get into design with an architecture-centric ps and background. Also, may I ask if you are domestic and do you go to a state or independent school. This is because our tutors basically told us that if you’re applying from indépendant, you gotta get 4A* minimum(NOT TROLLING) in order to even have a chance of an interview……But they WILL be more lenient if your applying from a state school because of contextual info. Hope this helps

Please don't listen to people telling you not to apply. Go for it, worst case you get rejected, at least u won't have regrets. I got an interview this year despite having A*AAA predictions.
