Failure to do work experience punishment

I didn’t want to do work experience because i believe it is a scam to get kids to do free work for small local businesses in the name of “experience”. Despite this, i still tried to get a placement but i received nothing back. As a result of this, my school says i will have to either work with the caretaker for the day or work in the cafeteria, i view both of these as a way of humiliation. Can i refuse to do this? What would happen if i did?

I know it can seem like a scam, but how about you find somewhere or something you are interested in and do your work experience here? I've benefitted from doing loads of work experience, in different areas. When I was 16 I felt a similar way to you and was worried that I would have to work for free but, in reality, that is totally not the case.

You will not be working for free, I can reassure you that. Nobody can force you to work for them especially as you are not an employee or regular worker. For the work experience, you mostly shadow the people who are working and write down your reflections. There will be opportunities for you to engage in the activities as well but it will not be anything difficult.

Some work experience schemes are paid too depending on where you choose to do it. I would recommend finding another placement than those offered by your school. Let me know if you need any help finding any
