Hi, I am probably not the most qualified person to answer but want to study IR and learn other languages as well. As IR is a very broad subject, you can work in lots of different sectors like in banks, NGOs, governments, thinktanks, international organisations, etc. However, this also means that you are a "jack of all trades, master of none". So if you work as a translator, it is good specialise in a certain geographical area and understand their culture. What course are you interested in?

Hey,

Adding another subject to your language studies brings huge benefits for your personal development and future employment opportunities.🚀 This is why The University of Essex offers many joint courses with The Department of Language and Linguistics which allows you to divide your course in either 50/50 or 25/75 in terms of credit load. You can study subjects such as business management, european studies, journalism or international relations and combine it with one or two languages offered at Essex which include Spanish, French, German, Italian or Mandarin Chinese. In your final year, there is an option to choose a Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling Skills module which can boost your employability (and from a personal perspective, it is really fun to do😁) In case you have a particular interest in international relations, I would suggest you looking at our BA International Relations and Modern Languages course.🌟

Hope this helps!
