You've answered your own question; if you want to join clubs or go to events, do so. Just don't go with high expectations of quickly making friends or finding a girlfriend; these things can take time and not every environment is suited to the latter. People indulge hobbies and interests out of a genuine love for them or for altruism, so it's not a dating arena.
