liv’s gcse study diary

hii, I’m liv and I’m a yr10, my mocks are soon, here’s a blog documenting my progress!

current teacher predicted grades;
english lit; 4
english lang; 4
maths; 4
bio; 7
chemistry; 4
physics; 6
food; 5
music; 4

my aims (that are a bit delulu but we move on);
English lit; 6/7/8
English lang; 5/6/7
Maths; 5
Biology; 7/8
Chemistry; 5/6
Physics; 7/8/9
Food; 6/7
Music; 4/5/6

Physics and English lit are my current favorite subjects so hopefully motivation/interest can let me get those grades, everything else I’m just aiming for as high as possible. I really need a 5 in maths so my teacher will let me sit the higher paper in the actual gcses as I’m currently doing the foundation paper and I need to sit higher for the A levels I want to take!

Any advice/tips (esp for maths, Chem, and music) are appreciated!

Todays revision/‘progress’ (11/05/24);
- Did maths homework
- Did a practice maths paper
- Plan on finishing my physics homework, some biology or chemistry revision, and some English language practice

This is a really good idea, and a good way to track progress.
I do music GCSE (year 11 and I do AQA but I think all exam boards are similar), and my biggest piece of advice is to get your pieces ready. For AQA, it's an 'ensemble' (like accompanied) piece and a solo and I think the earlier you choose the pieces the better, and practice them, if you can, every day. That way, when you have to preform them, you've done it so much, it will be easy or at least, you'll feel more confident. And for composition, don't leave it all to last minute, I did that, and it was very difficult trying to get the pieces done. Maybe do some practice compositions, just small pieces or ideas that you can then put together for a final piece later. Maybe you've already done a composition, I don't know, but maybe the advice still applies :smile:
Also, for maths, I would suggest after each lesson, going over the topic at home so that you understand it. Try some exam or practice questions (Maths Genie is good, and there's this website called third space learning that has a lot of useful stuff for maths), and also watch YouTube videos on subjects you struggle with because people explain things in different ways so it can be helpful to get a different take on a tricky topic.
Chemistry, I would advise getting a revision guide, they may be useful, but everyone learns in different ways. Our school gave us CGP revision guides, which are full of illustrations and content so it's quite visual. I also use this website called Cognito, they've got videos and exam-style questions (there's a limit, but if you go on incognito there is no limit), and again, YouTube videos (Freesciencelessons is good).
That's quite a lot to read, hope I didn't overwhelm you, but good luck! :biggrin:

what exam board do u do for music? i do edexcel and i had to a grade 4 performance. in terms of performance i got 60/60 and i got like 45?/60 on composition,and that really makes up a lot of your grade at the end of the day so make sure you focus on that and work hard on it. in terms of the listening exam, make sure you know your musical terms, for melody, harmony, texture, rhythm etc. one of the biggest mistakes i made in my mocks was only learning content about the pieces, but i didn't really understand the musical terms so i got a bad grade. Listen to ur set works because then you know the structure of each piece, and make sure you can HEAR the analysis, so you can pick out melodic devices, texture etc etc. also i would recommend that when you make revision, colour code each musical component, e.g. blue for structure, pink for melody. that really helps me. i hope this helps, good luck <333

Hi! Thank you for the advice, for music I do OCR and I haven’t picked my piece, honestly I’m not very good at my instrument (piano), but it did remind me to practice today, we have our solo performances and first composition due in this year, however I have a slight feeling I’ll record my solo performance next year due to being behind. However this has reminded me to ask to attend boosters to finish my composition piece this year!

I’ll definitely review the maths topics at home, i feel like that’ll help, I’ll also probably apply that to my science subjects too. I’ll also definitely check out third space learning and cognitio thank you for the recommendations! Oh and good luck on your GCSES :smile:

Here’s what I’ve done/going to do today;

Finished physics homework

Going to see a recorded stage adaptation of Macbeth with my dad, I’m doing Macbeth as my Shakespeare play and we’re covering it in yr11 so hopefully this gives me a bit of a head start

Plan to practice some piano

Maybe some bio or chem revision, I’m not too sure about this yet

Help hi, I forgot to update this

Random updates from this week,

my physics teacher gave my class a combined past paper for homework to see if we know the content or not, he made me take the higher tier which makes me think I’ll sit the higher tier for my mock which makes me feel nervous

I started planning for my food NEA2 mock, I’m really nervous lol

Created a ton of revision materials, like bio flash cards and chem mind maps, etc

I restarted my music coursework for the 3rd time.. I feel really defeated however there are music boosters for yr10 a starting soon so I’ll attend those to get it done with

Finally got my anthology, I will be annotating it soon

thank you! the higher paper was relatively easy, since I do triple and we were given combined for some reason it didn’t have any higher stuff so it was pretty straightforward :smile:

My dad is an English teacher and has been coaching me in English, today we did lang p2 q5 practice and it was surprisingly really good, my dad said it was on par to the example we looked at which was around a 7, which made me really happy

Restarted my bio flash cards cause I didn’t like them lol

Today was absolutely exhausting I’m so tired but oh well, I’ll get enough sleep. Had my physics lesson today and it was an absolutely mind boggling.

Anyways here’s what I’ve done;

A ton of maths revision (sparx + a booklet my teacher gave me), got my friends to check the booklet and they said the harder/grade 5 stuff was correct, which was a big relief

Annotated Ozymandias + My Last Duchess, I love these two they’re probably my favourite atm

One Korean lesson on Busuu (I’ve decided I’m going to pick up a language or two)

Here’s what I’m going to do;

Do some goddamn trigonometry revision, I’m really awful at it

Probably go over my speech/get some more feedback with my dad

A Korean lesson on Busuu

Maybe a Chemistry lesson on Cognito because Chemistry is not my thing

I also put time limits on my social media and a screen time limit on my phone so i don’t get distracted and get good sleep. Hope everyone has had a good day!

Hii! if you're struggling with chemistry , @freesciencelessons on youtube is extremely helpful it helped me get from a grade 5 to a grade 8 within the span of 4-5 months , I also recommend for paper 1 to get a strong grasp on mass and moles as it contributes to a lot of 4 and 5 markers in the paper , to do this you can use bbc bitesize(bbc bitesize also helps with all subjects!!) and seneca , if you can it's best to get the cgp textbook , additionally if you are struggling with science it's best to switch to combined science : trilogy , i did this and it's the best decision i've made!
Good luck , you'll do great!!! <3333

Thank you for the advice! Chem is the only one I’m struggling with so I wouldn’t go down to combined science and it would be practically impossible atp haha
