Jekyll and Hyde quote

This is really silly but I’ve never seen anyone mention this quote? “Had I approached my discovery in a more noble spirit, had I risked the experiment while under the empire of generous or pious aspirations, all must have been otherwise, and from these agonies of death and birth, I had come forth an angel instead of a fiend” - CH 10

I don’t know if I’ve misinterpreted this but wouldn’t it be great for an alternative interpretation because, whilst Jekyll derives great pleasure from his acts of evil as Hyde, deliberately searching for ways to separate both these people, as if ‘the unjust might go his way delivered from the aspirations and remorse of his more upright twin’, isn’t he in this quote reminiscing about how he could’ve done better if he’d been a better person ( and hence showing hints of remorse for his creation of Hyde ) or have I misinterpreted it. Thanks!

How I interpret it is that since Jekyll is an ordinary human, he is both good and bad. Since Jekyll thought about how he could act on his dark desires and stuff like that, he naturally turned towards the evil, however, if he had thought about acting good and not sinful, he would've become the complete opposite of Hyde (Mr Seek? I'm just joking) and he would be a more good person.
