I recently left a lecturing position in pharmacology at UCL so can answer any specific questions if you want to message me?
Some students go there with no chemistry A-level (or equivalent) and cope; although I think having studied chemistry is definitely preferable. In 3rd year, there's not many practicals at all in the taught modules (I can't think of any now I've left), but some students will do a lab based research project which is a big chunk of the 3rd year (unless you're doing the MSci and then you have to do a literature project in year 3, as you big lab project comes in year 4)
