I want to be a fashion designer but have no idea where to start.

I am currently 16 and in year 12 (11th grade), studying psychology, sociology and the EPQ. At the start of the year I was very confused what I wanted to do so I just took those subjects as they interest me. However, none of them fit with what I want to do in the future. I have recently discovered I want to have a career in fashion, like a fashion designer. I have always had an interest in fashion but didn't think of it as a career. I'm also really creative and good at drawing, although I need to work on my sewing which I can do in my own time. But now it is my dream to be a fashion designer. With the subjects I am currently taking, I have no idea what to do, like if I should drop out and work towards a fashion career or force myself to do a psychology career. Any advice?

hii i definitely relate to this i studied all science subjects in highschool but then realize i wanna be a fashion designer. This year im gonna do foundation in art and design, i think its a good way to start it, as i didnt rlly had any prior experience unlike the others who had done art or textile in highschool plus in uni there are tons of different specialisation for fashion design so i wanna take my time to learn and find which one suits me best. All i can say is work on passion projects and build your portfolio early, i worked on it pretty late and i absolutely regret it

Hi @jsnehehehehheh

I definitely agree that doing an art and design foundation year after year 13 is a great idea if you want to become a designer. As you will be able to specialise in fashion design, work on your sewing and be creative while building your portfolio on the course to then apply to a fashion design course at uni. I would also agree that doing projects in your free time and creating a portfolio is a great idea to then be able to show when you apply to the foundation course and develop our skills. It's good that you already have drawing as a strong skill as I feel this is useful on the foundation course and important for fashion design, definitely add your drawings to your portfolio.

Good luck
