Future international student at Sheffield Hallam

Hello! I plan to be an international student at Sheffield Hallam next January. I received an offer for the international foundation year program in business, law and social sciences and then transitioning to Marketing Communications and Advertising course. From what I have been able to research on my own, the accommodation they offer seems very good, I have heard only good things about the city of Sheffield, and the best thing is that the price of the university is affordable for me. On the other hand, I don't know how the university is in terms of academics and opportunities and how beneficial it would be to me to study the Marketing Communications and Advertising course there. Also, I haven't seen that many international students doing undergrad there and also there is not much variety of clubs/ organizations compared to other universities, I'm afraid I won't make friends :frown: I contacted a student from my country who graduated from that university last year and studied the same course. What she told me was that the biggest disadvantage she had was socially, she was the only international student in her course so it was very difficult for her to create a group of friends and at the beginning she hung out with the friends of one of her mutual friends who was studying at Sheffield Uni. Well feel free to comment negative or positive experiences and also if you have an advice or recommendations. Any info will be of great help to me!

Hi @rebeca.v3 ,

I thought I'd reply to this to give you a bit of insight into my experience at Hallam.

I also study a business course and on my course there are a lot of international students! I think it will depend from course to course but in my experience there is a mix of international and home students which has been great 🙂

In terms of the teaching itself, I have found all of my tutors to be great and really helpful. You may have some of the same tutors that I have had and they have all been really good with helping you with your work and any questions I have had they have been there to answer them for me. The teaching in general has been great and I particularly like that the seminar classes are not too big so you get to know the people in your classes well and also the tutors have plenty of time to answer anyone's questions and they tend to come round and help you with any work you need help with.

You also get three different advisors which are assigned to you which means they answer any questions you have which has been really good- you get an academic advisor, a student support advisor and an employability advisor. They have been really good with helping me when I have needed it and are good at setting up meetings with you to help you more. The employability advisors are great with helping you to get a placement if you do a placement with your course.

Personally, I have found Hallam to be a really sociable uni and everyone has been really friendly which has been great for me. I have found there to be a wide variety of societies and clubs so I would recommend still going to the freshers society fair so you can look at them all and see if there is one that you fancy joining as they are great opportunities and are really fun! This is a great way of making friends if you are worried about this.

Again, if you are worried about making friends I would recommend joining some Facebook groups before you join as this is a great way of meeting people and making some friends! There are usually lots of different groups so you will be bale to find some people this way!

I hope some of this helps and good luck with your decision making!
