work experience!

im in y12 and obvs if yk we are supposed to find work experience for 2 weeks at the end of the school year. i wanna do dentistry , but finding w/e for that is so hard since u always js get rejected 💔 hence i have resorted to doing an online course for that, but what would be an efficient form of work experience for the end of the school year irl? i genuinely have no idea atp and rlly need to find atleast something. any input is appreciated :wink:

To see if thats acceptable, you need to speak to your school.

For Dentistry, any healthcare experience is valuable, and any 'people' experience. Volunteering at a care-home or shadowing any sort of healthcare worker including GP's nursing staff etc is valuable. If you really can't find anything else, then volunteering at a charity shop more long term (ie. a few hours every week over the summer) would still be useful as it takes you outside your comfort zone, gets you talking to lots of people, and working alongside usually older people - all good experience.

Hi,

fellow year 12 student here :hello:

. I was trying to get onto medicine (not so sure I want to anymore) and I managed to snag a 2 day placement in the GP, but the Uni I wanted to go to (Sheffield Uni) had specified that medical placement was not needed and honestly all you needed was some form of experience where you are working with people. So whether that be in a school, care home etc, if you can try get a placement somewhere like that then you should be fine as long as you can speak about your experience effectively. So something like "working at x,y and z gave me so and so skill which I could use in this and this way". That kind of thing.

I know you probbaly want one to gain experience and since you're likely to enjoy it, but don't stress over it if it's not even required!

ooh i never thought about this tbh, i just assumed that most places required you to have some sort of prior experience but ill be sure to check this out!

also, i’m not 100% but ever since the covid outbreak and places realised the work experience for certain things isn’t easy to find, online w/e is acceptable aswell right?
