Student finance application for a 2nd degree

I have already asked previously if my course I will be returning to is covered by student finance. It’s a STEM subject computing part time for Nottingham college. I have previously studied a full time degree and topped it up to a honours degree in digital media. As I was filling out my application it says I wasn’t eligible for student finance as I already have an honours and cancelled my application.

Does anyone have any advice?

Hi there, what is the course you're applying for and when does this start? Thanks, Jason

Hi Jesslaa7,

Computing is an exception course if studied on a part time basis so if you already hold an honours degree you will still be able to get funding for this course.

Thanks,
Calum

Then what am I able to do? As the application is not letting me progress. It’s saying you already have an honours so cannot apply for student finance at this time, your application will be cancelled.

Hi there,

You should do a paper application and send it to us by post so we can override the system. You can locate the forms here https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms
Once we get the application it can take 6-8 weeks for processing.

Thanks, Ross

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the forms. I have just looked over them and the only part that confuses me is the bit to do with household income.

I am 27 and living with my parents. Do I have to put their income in or just my own. Thanks

HI Jessica,

Was it the PTMN Form you printed off? Can you confirm if you have a partner or children?

Thanks,
Claire

On the PTMN when you go through this section 6 asks if you're over 25 and if you say YES it says go to section 7. Then section 8, if you tick I am a single independent student, it tells you to go to the terms and conditions on pages 32 and 33.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Ross,

I have another question about the form. The PTNM form. I have been on Universal Credit for 3 years from starting the course. But I live with my parents. I’m over 25. Does this still count as an independent student? And I’ll just put my universal credit benefit office address on the form where it says employer?

Also, can I get the form sent to me. As I don’t have a printer.

Hi there,

Yes, since you're over 25 you don't need to include your parents' income at all, even if you live with them.

Can you try to apply online again, just in case that works? https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login

If not, please call us on 0300 100 0607 and we'll post the form to you. You can also send us a live chat on your account on Monday morning from 9:00am and request this then.

Thanks, Graeme
