lancaster french and linguistics (and life in general)

complete uni guide 2025 league tables have come out and lancaster is high in both linguistics and french! i know i want to study this at uni and i'm wondering if there are any current students studying the course or similar courses who can give me an insight into what it's like - what the work is like, what you study, how much study in small groups/face to face learning you get.

I'm also curious about student life is like - I know it's a campus outside of the city, but does that affect nightlife e.g. clubs/bars/pubs, as well as stuff like concerts (even just small concerts with a student band; is there an existing scene?
thank you!

Hi @cabaret

I believe the linguistics department is quite highly regarded. Whilst I’m not a French not linguistics student myself you may be able to speak with a French and German student online at https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/ by filtering the area of study to language culture and translation. You could also direct your questions to the department Languages and cultures [email protected] Linguistics [email protected]

The campus is about a 15 min bus ride from the centre of town. Lancaster is a small city but still has a selection clubs including the student Union run sugarhouse. This is a student only club so there’s an extra level of safety as a student ID is required for entry. I’m not a big party goer myself but I have been to sugar and a few of the other clubs during my time here. There are plenty of pjs b about and a selection of bars too.

Recently there was the highest point musical festival at a local park and I believe the roc soc have held music nights in the past.

Hope that helps!

Hi @cabaret
The university is about a 15 minute bus ride from the city, and although the city is small there's a good selection of pubs, bars and clubs. As Tineke mentioned there's a students union nightclub called sugar, but theres also 2 other clubs in town. Lancaster has quite a big life music scene with a few live music pubs like 'John o Guant' and 'The Pub' having live music on basically every night. Also every year in November there's a local music festival in the town which is a great event, where so many local venues have live music on throughout the week. There is also some student bands that perform in college bars on campus a couple of times a term.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
