Stem work experience

Hi I’m a year 12 student looking to study NatSci at Cambridge I’m wondering if anyone had any suggestions for stem work experience in the chemistry or physics field

Hi, I recommend the website Springpod as it offers virtual work experience from top companies and universities which you can complete in your own time. For example, I’ve done an introduction to pharmacology one, a biological sciences one, and a tech one. I found it very interactive!

This isn’t work experience per se, but I would recommend doing further reading (e.g BBC Science and Nature, Natural Scientist). Also I would recommend doing science competitions/Olympiad/CREST award.

Thanks so much, I’ve been looking on Springpod and it seems positive I think I will keep looking I’m just seeing if theres any in person work experience
Just to note that Cambridge doesn't expect work experience for Natural Sciences. You can have an equally competitive application without it and the time it takes could be better spent on other relevant supercurriculars.

I would also look on the Cambridge website for wider reading resources.

If you need in person work experience I would contact local universities/labs. But in person work experience isn’t a total necessity for the application.

It’s more I’d like a way to explore the field before applying. I was considering contacting the local hospital to shadow someone in medical physics as that’s a topic only glanced on in alevel

Of course, if it's beneficial to you for other reasons then absolutely go for it! I just thought I'd point it out as many applicants erroneously believe they need it

No of course thanks so much for your reply, it wouldn’t be the focal point of my supercurriclars but rather something to reference as an example of beyond the alevel exploration

Hi,

For virtual work experience, Forage is a good website to have a look at. For wider learning, which is also good to put on a personal statement, Future Learn has lots of open access courses to explore.

Hope this helps
