When I put my essay through an ai detector it got quite a high score so I went and put some previous essays into them and they also got quite a high score whilst Turnitin gave them a low score. So I was wondering if ai detectors are reliable or not?

How much AI-generated content was in the essays you put through the AI detector and Turnitin?

don't use it for work then. Too risky
AI is trained on huge datasets of human generated content, so it is difficult get another tool to spot the difference with any degree of reliability.
But since you didn't use AI in the first instance, really no need to check or worry about it.

Turnitin it was 8% overall with includes plagiarism but with the AI detectors it was around 50%.

I don't mean how much did those tools detect. I meant how much AI-generated contact was actually present.
You describe these as "some previous essays", but you don't say whether or not you used AI (at least in part) to generate them in the first place.

i only used ai to help me with structuring the essays everything else was done by me.

It's a shame that some AI was used, as it means it's more difficult to interpret the results.
If you want to know how accurate these tools are at detecting AI, then feed them some essays which have had zero AI used, and then feed them some which have been produced via AI. The results will tell you how accurate they are at detecting the involvement of AI.

Let me check that again if you think you need to, and then let's find out what the AI percentage is.

To date, not one bullet-proof AI detector has been developed to flag AI content. Even Turntin gives a disclaimer that instructors must employ human judgement when grading, and not rely on it's detection tool.
