SFE - Compelling Personal Reasons

Hi,

I am requesting some advice, please. I apologise for my writing, I hope it is clear. I am quite stressed and worried about my situation. My situation is detailed below.

I have unfortunately been unable to complete the first year of my degree due to serious illness.

I am now in contact with a Complex Case and Safeguarding Co-ordinator in the Student Services department at my university. I have also been receiving treatment since January. I am recovering well now and am still in treatment. I must submit a letter and medical evidence to my SFE account online as support to claim for compelling personal reasons for this first year. However, I have not officially withdrawn from the course just yet.

I would like to apply for a different degree and university in September 2024, however, the degree is 4 years.

Can I withdraw from my current course, upload my evidence for CPR for this year on my online SFE account, and then submit a brand new application starting in September 2024?

I understand that CPR is awarded on individual cases, but due to my circumstances, I think it is very unlikely that my case for CPR would be refused.

I am a little confused as I am thinking until the CPR is looked at and approved (hopefully) I will not qualify for 4 years of funding for the new degree starting in September 2024, as 1 year has already been used pending the CPR award. I am unsure of the time scale for current CPR claims, however, it could be several months as SFE must be very busy at this time of year. Will SFE outright decline my application for the 4 years because of my situation?

Also, I am currently in financial hardship as my husband is still awaiting his visa from the Home Office from his application which was sent in 2021. Due to this, he is unable to work which along with my illness over this year has caused increased financial hardship. Therefore when I withdraw from my current course I will unfortunately not be in a position to repay the maintenance loan and grant I received for this year now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my query.

Hi Saara,

You'd be best to apply for the 24/25 Academic Year and uploading your CPR evidence ASAP. The applications themselves can take 6-8 weeks for processing and the CPR would be processed alongside the application. You do not need your current application to be withdrawn.

If you are changing course and university you'd be considered a new student again and would need to apply on a PN1 form. The PN1 can be located here https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms it would be required to be sent by post and of course, you can send the CPR with the paper application.

Thanks, Ross
