Rock and Roll generally refers to the type of music which became popular through the 50s/60s most prominently in the USA, it was seen as a rebellion from the traditional jazz and blues that came before it, but still incorporated a lot of the same stylistic features. Elvis Presley was and is probably the biggest/most recognisable R&R artist to date. Rock is sort of just an evolution of R&R, changing with trends as time went on. Modern rock is a lot more 'harsh', grungier some might say, bands like Guns 'n Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins etc. Music is shaped by people, and what's happening in the world, so the main difference between Rock and Rock and Roll is really just time and culture :h:
