Uni of York Marketing BA

Hi, I'm planning to apply for the University of York for the course Marketing (with a year in industry), however, I want to collect more opinions about studying at Uni of York as I am an international student. I've heard that the weather in York is quite dreadful, as it usually rain, even in the summer. Moreover, there has been some comments on how the nightlife there is quite bland and I, personally, would like cities with a better social life. Can anybody give em their opinions and information about the diversity of culture (as I am an international student), the nightlife, the course itself, etc? I would love to hear from everyone!

Hi Martha Trinh,

These are all really good questions, I'll answer them one at a time if that's ok:

Weather. I'll admit it's very changeable 😆. In terms of temperature we're about one, maybe two degrees colder than London but we're also in a rain shadow formed by the hills so we're actually A LOT dryer than the west side of the country. The BBC or Met Office weather forecasts are pretty good for what it's going to be like each day but more than a day or two ahead they get much less accurate, it's worth checking them out. Summers in York can be glorious; warm and dry, but yes they can also have the odd day of rain. I've never encountered a really bad summer where it's rained all the time though.

Nightlife. I think this depends on what you're looking for. York city does have lots of pubs and some clubs and there's a HUGE range of student societies who are very active. It doesn't have the same range as central London though, we're just not that big. We're also only a short train ride to Leeds and Manchester (the direct train to London is just over 2 hours) so those cities are accessible.

Diversity. The University itself is a very diverse community with a large international population (just check out the societies list 🙂). The city itself looks less diverse on paper but there are a few good international supermarkets catering to different nationalities and as someone who's mixed race I've personally been really happy here and have enjoyed exploring Yorkshire. I'd recommend chatting with current international students on Unibuddy to find out about their experiences.

Course. There are a couple of open days coming up if you want to chat to staff or meet people who are interested in the same course and half way down the same page there's a blog by a student currently doing your course too.

Wow, that was a long post, hope you found it useful but let us know if you have any other questions and I really, really would recommend Unibuddy.

E. 🙂

Thank you E for the information😆! They are very helpful! This has clear up my worries and queries.
Hello! I would like to add on, as a current international undergraduate student.

York nightlife is maybe not as huge and exciting as bigger cities, however due to the club nights being organised for students only, it tends to feel less intimidating, more friendly, and overall safer. In my experience these nights are very fun, especially if you surround yourself with fun people.

The university itself is significantly more diverse than you may hear, or see through statistics. I have met many different types of people, and there are lots of opportunities to find others who relate to your upbringing. I have never felt isolated or out of place in any of my classes or any events.

Please let me know if you have any further questions
