thx 4 all the answers guys, even if it kinda got off topic at times

Well this thread has been sort of hijacked so I'm gonna try and help the original poster - I would say it isn't so much the university as the city/town you are going to - big cities will have much more bars/clubs etc and are generally more open-minded. Obviously London is the biggie followed by Brighton and Manchester, but Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle should all have a fairly thriving scene.

My geographical knowledge of the UK is fairly poor so I'm not too sure where some of the unis you mentioned are near. They seem to be campus universities, away from big towns and cities so that might be a problem. I think York is a no-no, very traditional place and I'm not sure they even have a single gay pub there. Essex might be the best seeing as it's reasonably close to London.

As for the second poster, LSE or City University would both be fine seeing as they're in London and so you get the open-mindedness that that entails. Swansea I'm not sure about, can't imagine a bustling gay scene there.

Hope that helps you both anyway
yeah i know, i also meant which wud b the best uni considering its surroundings etc.. 2 give u an idea, bath is near bristol(which u mentiond), warwick near birmingham (same) and st andrews near ed'burgh (i herd its a cool city too but u didnt mention it?). i no theyre all on campus unis but then i can have both the community feel with a gay society or so and also make my way 2 the city big lights at nite ..oh and thx4the advice bout york!
and also i really wantd 2go 2 london 4that reason, but i dunt really think ill b goin to essx uni tho..

anyway thx a lot 4ur help, and keep voting/posting!
st andrews and mainly warwick are ahead 4now, but wat about bath?

bye adam

Thanks for the advice, I also have that idea about Swansea with the "only gay in the village" reputation in wales
I live about 20 miles from swansea, there's actually a strong gay scene there and in Cardiff (I have a lot of gay male friends who I sometimes go out with!)
You shoulda pplied to Aber, apparently it's the gay capital of Wales :aetsch:

You should have applied to Manchester, it has its own "Gay Village."

I would go for brighton. It had a large gay comunity and loads of gay clubs. One of the friends I have made in the med school here is gay and he loves it here.

i have a couple of gay friends at warwick and theres a society for lesbian, gay, transgendered and something else i cant remember.. that is quite open. people are quite accepting and bham isnt far at all if u want to be right in the gay clubbing scene (went to dv8 a couple of weeks ago was really good fun!).

i would imagine that a university in london itself would be best. seeing as, even if the school is a bit conservative, there is still a gay community in the city.

I was born in Brighton, but no longer live there. But even where i live now i'm always hearing things about the "thriving gay community".

I'm always in the middle of the jokes as well, when my mates mention me being from Brighton! lol.

don't go to essex! colchester has NO gay pubs or bars, chelmsford is annoying to get to and has a few part time ones. 'essex's biggest gay pub' - the fox and hounds - is in the middle of nowhere, you have to get a taxi to get to it and therefore costs loads to go there. i dunno bout the university's scene itself, but the surrounding area is crap! i live here, trust me.... go somewhere else!

u should pick the uni that has the degree u want to do best and worry about stuff like that second! no offence but saying u want to pick a place solely on how good the gay scene is makes u sound more like u don't even care about what uni u go to! or am i completely missing the point?

Brighton all the way...

(I live here!) Thriving gay community and social scene. No prejudice at all, (in some clubs gay couples outnumber straight.. Not applicable for you yet but once you're in the clubs )

Sussex Uni is in Brighton aswell (And a better Uni..)
I'm visiting Brighton tomorrow (get to know the town, etc)
because I've got Sussex as my 1st choice for October. ^_^

I'm not gay, but... whatever!
As long as everyone's friendly and up for fun, no matter.

There's a lot of votes from Warwick! Not 100% sure why...although most of the male friends I have here are gay, I think that would be the circles I mix in rather than the uni itself. I think most young people are quite open-minded about homosexuality these days so I'd say you'll be accepted anywhere really - don't worry about it too much.
