How worthy is Ustinov college for PG?

Hello, Im an international PG student who will study at Durham. I need to submit a college preference application and here are some of my criteria.
1. Catered
2. En-suite
3. relatively big PG community

Apparently, Ustinov has the biggest community for PG, but it's self catered one.
Concerning networking and opportunities in Ustinov, is it worth joining? would there be many disadvantages to not choosing Ustinov as PG?

Hi there

That's a very good question. Even though I'm an undergraduate student, I can offer some perspective:

Ustinov's PG community indeed is the biggest being the only PG college, but I don't think that will limit your chances of meeting other PG students. All colleges have an MCR (Middle Common Room) or SCR (Senior Common Room) which is a community of all postgraduates in that college. The SCR/MCR also holds events within the college, including talks from different speakers that could be related to a career field you are interested in. All colleges with an MCR/SCR will have an Instagram page that's easy to find with a quick search and where they advertise these events. There are also Inter-MCR events where you can meet postgrads from other colleges/ Most colleges also have an alumni officer who can connect you with your college alumni and offer career guidance.

So I'd say you definitely don't have to limit yourself to just Ustinov. You could consider the following colleges as they meet your criteria:

Van Mildert: 61 PG rooms which are all ensuite and catered
Trevelyan: Catered college with 48 PG rooms out of which 27 are ensuite
St Aidans: Catered college with mostly ensuite rooms but some are single with shared bathrooms

Apart from these, most others which have ensuite rooms like Castle, Marys, John Snow, Stephenson etc are self-catered while those which are catered don't necessarily have ensuites. So the 3 colleges above suit your criteria quite well.

Hope this helps
