On question 5 for the higher paper it says Sophie drives a distance of 513 kilometres on a motorway in France.

She pays 0.81 euros for every 10 kilometres she drives.

(a) Work out an estimate for the total amount that Sophie pays.

And for the answer I got 41.553 but I estimated down to 41.55 euros

Would I still got all 3 marks or only 2.

I rounded 513 to 500

Then 0.81 to 0.8

My final answer was 40

Then 0.81 to 0.8

My final answer was 40

Would I still got all 3 marks down for rounding down from 41.553 to 41.55??

nah if the question is estimate you've gotta round at the start

So only 2/3 marks?

probably 0 marks tbh, you didn't do what the question was asking

No way because I still got the correct answer , you don’t know what ur talking about.

but you didn't estimate the right answer, you calculated it. The paper doesn't test your ability to type things into a calculator, it wants you to have strong estimation skills. Whats the point of asking a question if you don't want to hear the answer.

It was a non calculator paper so I still showed I could get the answer and I even rounded down which does actually count as a estimate since it’s not the exact answer

look I get its annoying but you've gotten it wrong, don't worry about it.

that's not really what an estimate is in this context

Nah I’m pretty sure there will be a range of answers because there are many ways to estimate it. So I’m likely getting all 3 marks or 2 at least 👍I didn’t get it wrong.

Why would you even ask the question if when someone answers you you just say No I am right. Its not that deep, don't worry about dropping a few marks

Nah you don’t know what ur on about. I guarantee a real Edexcel marker would say I got 2 or 3 marks for it. I only asked the question so hopefully someone with more knowledge could answer my question.👍

That's not estimating - it's rounding. I suspect you'll get 0.

But if it’s out of 3 marks it means there has to be ways to get 2/3 or 1/3 so me doing the actual calculation will at least give me 1 or 2 marks since gces exam boards are lenient

Doing alevel maths doesn’t mean you know the markscheme? If u really think I got 0 marks ur a idiot, I at least got 2/3 minimum

Original post by ellisanstee

Please stop, 2 separate people have explained why you got 0 marks. I took GCSE further maths and understand the mark scheme. Please stop being disrespectful, you sound very entitled

Ok if i got 0 marks can u explain how someone can get 2/3 marks?
