The Student Room Group

university of edinburgh accomodation questions

Hey I had a few questions about accom at uoe

For self catered, do all the blocks participate in the freshers week activities?

Are the blocks heated or can I buy my own little heater for my room? (I'm from aus and I can't handle temps under 22oC!!)

Are the streets fairly safe to walk around at all times?

Do the fridges and pantries in the kitchen have separate spaces for each student - I don't want to get food mixed up!

And also about Uni life
How many days a week do people usually go to uni and are there like communal microwaves to heat up food at uni?

Thanks :>

Hi!
AFAIK, all accommodation participates in freshers week activities. The residence team will put on events through the week for your accommodation/building.
The blocks are heated and there's usually heaters in every room. You can control these however you'd like and I believe for most halls heating bills are included in the rent. Although, I'm pretty sure you're not allowed plug-in heaters.
I found the streets of Edinburgh to be safe, a lot safer than other cities I've walked around. Obviously everywhere will have some sort of anti-social behaviour, crime, etc, but this varies depending on where in the city you are.
It's up to you and your flatmates to decide where to put your stuff, but usually there will be room to dedicate each person a shelf each, a cupboard each, etc.
How often you are actually on campus will depend on your course. I was studying a humanities subject and was at uni basically every day. There are microwaves on campus, both at central and kings buildings. The food on campus is also very good!
Good luck for September!
