what happens if you don’t put your candidate number on your exam paper? the invigilator in my exam said not to worry about it so most of my class didn’t either but now I’m worried it won’t get scanned in or something

At the end of each exam, the invigilator(s) check every paper to ensure that the essential information (e.g. candidate number and centre number) is complete and correct on the front page. If it is not they add it / correct it. (The front page is the only page to which they're allowed to make amendments.) Only once everything has been checked, they packaged-up and sent off to the the exam board.

This is why the invigilator said "not to worry". Students forgetting to enter their candidate number / centre number (or getting it wrong) is a surprisingly common occurrence.
