Changing course after 3 years

I'm currently on a 3 year Biology course with an additional year abroad and I'm currently near the end of my second year and set to study abroad in my next year. I'm thinking about maybe changing courses as I can't really see myself enjoying working in this field and I'm thinking of switching to architecture (3 yr BA) but I'd have to restart for year 1. From what I've read, if I complete the 3 years in the biology degree I'd only be funded for one year. But I've also read that I can still receive maintenance, (I currently receive full maintenance + bursary) so could I pay tuition fees using maintenance? Also if I were to do a masters in architecture would this also be funded fully as I've read that it is counted under undergraduate funding? Also, how would my degree title change as I would have already completed 3 yrs in biology at 2:1 or higher? Also would I be able to do a credit replacing year abroad to decrease tuition fee costs in the architecture course?

Hi there,

Do you hold any qualifications currently? Do you have any other previous study? Would your new course be Full time? Was your previous study full time?

Thanks,
Claire

I've only done my current biology degree and it is full time and I will probably do the new course full time as well. So no previous degrees.

Hi macaronichez,

If you have 2 years of previous study on your current Biology course you would need to self fund the 1st year of your new course. You would not receive a tuition fee loan but would still be eligible for a maintenance loan. You can use the maintenance loan as you wish but the purpose of it is to cover your living costs.

What is the name of the course and university that you are thinking of studying?

You would need to discuss with your university how your degree title would change and if you can transfer credits.

Thanks,
Calum

It's very unlikely you'd be able to transfer credits from a biology course to an architecture course. There won't be any overlap.

Hi there,

Have you spoken to your university if you can transfer credits?

Thanks,

I've talked to my supervisor and she said to consider it more while I'm on my year abroad before I make any decisions. Also, as I'm planning on continuing with my year abroad (3rd year) would that mean I'd have to pay the first two years tuition fees (9250) fully or could I get a smaller tuition fee loan as my 3rd year has reduced tuition fee loan (1,387.5) so would I be able to get 7,862.5 tuition fee loan instead of none at all as the third year isn't charged at the full amount? And I wanted to ask as well how does the architecture masters affect this as I've read that it is treated as a 5 year undergraduate degree by sfe so does that affect how much funding I would be able to get?

Hi there,

You would not be able to get a reduced Tuition Fee Loan unfortunately. It's a year of previous study which we have to take into consideration so the amount of fees being paid is irrelevant.

If you need to start from year 1 for Architecture then it'd be part 1 which is undergraduate funded.

Ross

So how which years would I need to self fund the tuition if I started after completing my year abroad (3rd year)?

Hi macaronichez,

If you start a new course that is say, 3 years in length, the calculation would be 3+1-2= 2 years. That means you need to self fund year 1 Tuition fees. The exception to this would be if you had compelling personal reasons as to why you didn't complete the previous course. You would need to provide a letter from a 3rd party professional such as a GP and/or university, that would confirm what happened, when this happened and how this directly impacted your studies. If that evidence is accepted, you would then be awarded with the Tuition Fee Loan in year 1 also.

Thanks, Clare

But if I continue my year abroad would I have to self fund the first two years?

Hi macaronichez,

Yes, as that would then be 3 years of previous study prior to starting the new course.

Thanks, Clare
