The Student Room Group

University

hello!! i had 2 questions:

1. (grades aside) if a student goes to a summer course for a specific uni and plans on applying to that same uni, do they get an advantage? a friend of mine is doing that and we're applying to the same unis (coincidentally). im afraid that, just because i dont have the money to pay for such courses, it's going to be disadvantageous to me.

2. i want my personal statement to stand out, so im writing a novel (as a passion project) and im leading a 'mock trial' extracurricular activity in my school - another thing: that friend is also leading the extracurricular alongside me.

i have an offer for an internship (pre-uni), so i guess that's good...but REASSURE ME. PLS 😭

1) i know for some summer schools i did, they offered a bursary if you came to the uni, and a reduced offer by one grade, but it depends entirely with the university and course so worth asking
2) personal statement sounds good, ill be honest statements for undergrad really dont have to be that good

Yes, some summer schools give you a 'guarantee' of an offer, or even a lower grade offer if you do get an offer.
BUT this depends entirely on the Uni and the type of Summer School. If your friend is paying ££ then its likely that this is just 'an experience' and not a Summer School designed to widen participation or encourage specific (disadvantaged) students to apply to that Uni etc. I suggest you give that specific Uni and call and talk to them.
