How do AS/A levels work for WJEC

I’m a bit confused about the WJEC system.
So I know welsh students all do their AS exams in year 12 (as I am painfully doing now 😭). And then our A2 exams in year 13.
I also know you need 90% UMS in year 13 to get an A*.

So how does it work between your AS results contributing to the whole a level (I know it’s about 40% ish), but in terms of grades if you get a B in year 12 AS is there any chance getting an A* overall or can you only get one grade higher than you got at AS max?

Also in terms of resit policies, some unis don’t accept A level resits, especially for medicine! And that’s normally because you’re doing it for more than two years. But they don’t say much about AS resit policies, since if you were to resist AS modules on year 13 you’d still be doing it in a 2 year timeframe. Technically it’s like students from England taking the a level in a year, and you could count your AS exam similarly to summer predicted mocks.

Does anyone have a better understanding of the system?

A lot of my friends are resitting Year 12 Biology and Chemistry at the same time as Y13 and universities are fine with this usually depending on your UCAT for courses like medicine (with the exception of places like Oxford and Cambridge). Unfortunately if you get a B at AS however I think the highest you can get in Y13 is an A as you need an A in year 12 and 90% of UMS in Y13 for an A*. I’m not an expert on this subject so might be wrong but yeah

Thank you! It’s a relief to hear that some of your friends are resitting y12 and for med. Just finished my AS exams, hopefully they’ll be fine but it’s reassuring knowing there’s a backup if not

hey, im doing my a levels atm! I did AS last year, as far as I know the exams you do at AS level they are 40% of your whole a level grade, so getting 100 ums will secure you that full 40% (so try work really hard now to receive that 40% so next year youre a bit more chilled). If you get a B at AS, dont worry because that B could be a high B and still wont ruin your chances of getting an A*. At the end of the day its not the marks or grade you should worry about, its the ums thats very important!
im sorry if I havent made sense, do ask more questions if youre still confused

Hi that makes sense thanks! I’m hoping for high As in my bio chem and maths exams this year, and a B to an A if lucky for further maths. Hopefully it’ll be enough ums points to give me a chance at a couple A* next year!

ah good luck! and even if you dont get those grades ( which you hopefully will) you can always repeat. I applied to medicine and none of my unis cared about my predicted grades so repeating won't disadvantage you.

Hi. For WJEC, does the A2 content follow on from the AS content? And if so, does that mean that AS content could also be tested in the A2 exams in year 13?

This depends on what subjects you take I think, I take more creative subjects (Media, English Lit and Criminology) and in these subjects we are tested on the same theories (with a few more added on) however the texts we study are completely different (eg TV instead of music videos). I’m not sure about STEM subjects though sorry :frown: So I would probably say that if you don’t know the content this year or wont remember it next year this wont be a major issue as what you learn in year 12 is only a tiny section of the course in year 13.

Yes they do, especially for sciences you will have to remember a lot of things from year 12 but it's not an issue because these things are mostly common sense and you will remember them anyway. For maths also some methods do come up but they can't ask you a full question on a topic you did last year, it's more just like applying your knowledge.

Oh ok. I'm studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology so do you think it would be worth going over the content again before starting the A2 content?

I don’t think so, I think just enjoy the end of Year 12 and summer as you should be starting Year 13 work if your school/college makes you go back after half term, and go over any relevant content for your course at the start of year 13, as there is no point in going over everything if it won’t be relevant next year

I do math bio and chem, so id say dont go over them before you start A2 content because at the end you might forget some of the content. before your exam, just look over it briefly. Like I said its mainly common sense most of the time and you will remember most of it from year 12 without having to look at it
