Can I get into Oxford medicine?

hi! I'm currently in yr 12 and I take bio, chem, maths and philosophy. I've been predicted 4A* and I am currently doing an EPQ. I volunteer at a hospital and I have done work experience. I am also going to enter an essay competition. Is there anything else I should be doing to strengthen my application? I've spoken to some Oxford Med students and they told me they ran medicine society at their school but I am not currently doing that. Does this lower my chances? Thank you.

What are your GCSE grades?

You don't necessarily have to run a medical society. Is there one at your school? Are you participating in it? Have you made any contributions to it (e.g. done research and given a presentation on a topic of interest)?

It's good that you're doing volunteering and have done work experience. What's important though is what you can say about it. What have you learned from it? How has is it impacted your thinking/perspective? Has it caused you to develop an interest in x, ...which has led to y?

If there are STEM challenges e.g. biology/chemistry olympiad type, it could be useful to participate. Don't need to "win" or get the top award, just taking part shows your interest.

What's left is the UCAT - this will likely be the deciding factor for whether you'll have a strong application. As for your current situation, you have a solid foundation to go off.

For now, make sure you prioritise any AS/end of year exams, followed by UCAT preparation.

Good luck!

Getting into medicine anywhere is hard enough, never mind Oxford. The most important thing for your applications is the UCAT. Forget about 'running societies' - for any med school and ESPECIALLY Oxford, they just care about 1) your UCAT and 2) your interview if you get one.
Focus on your UCAT. Once you get your mark, THEN start thinking about extracurricular and strengthening your application over the summer and into yr 13

As the person above said, all they really care about is your UCAT. That's how they will decide whether you get an interview, and after that it's more academically focussed. Whilst at some medical schools they ask about volunteering etc in the interview, an Oxford interview will primarily have an academic/ethical focus, with less time spent talking about your volunteering or work experience. It's obviously still very important to have work experience and volunteering, but it sounds as though you've already done that. At this point of the year your main focus should 100% be your end of year exams, the UCAT and writing your personal statement. Good luck!

Hey had a few friends who got interviewed for Oxford med and one eventually got an offer. As others have said, the UCAT is all that matters at this point. Our school also had a Medsoc that no one seemed to mention in their PS or during the interview so you're good.

Med soc what's that? I have a med soc at my school that is literally dead. The teacher put few pets to lead the soc but it was plain disaster. I volunteered to lead but was rejected....guess I was not the teachers pet. Not impressed with my med soc at all

No need to lead a med soc, it's not even counted as supercuricular activity.

You would need 10 8/9 at GCSE usually for med at Oxford.

Hi I have just received my GCSE results and I am planning to apply for oxford med but I got 4 8s (english lang, lit, Spanish and further maths )and 7 9son top of this I go to a school, which typically get good GCSE grades. I personally think that these grades might make me not as competitive in my application. Am I right in thinking that?
For a levels I am planning to do maths, biology, chemistry and history. Is there anything I should do to prepare to get into med school and any advice for a levels
