Durham College Allocations

I’m pretty disappointed. Was hoping for a purely traditional college as I am not a fan of normal rowdy partying. I know it isn’t as bad as it could be but I got Cuthbert’s. It’s pretty known for partying, bars, drinking etc. I’m Autistic and I really don’t feel comfortable at all. Feeling a bit ****, was hoping for Hatfield. (My first choice.) Any advice on embracing this? I really want to be happy with it but im absolutely devastated in all honesty.

It's probably not the biggest consolation but Cuth's is still on the Old Bailey and it's one of the oldest colleges out there, seeped in tradition. As for the night life, there are lots of quiet places to sneak off to all over Durham, out of the way of all the partying. Personally, I'm excited about all of the green areas surrounding Durham and the gardens in all of the colleges. I was allocated to Hilde Bede even after ranking all the Bailey colleges before it, but it's encouraging that everyone I know who's been to Durham has loved it, regardless of colleges. I'm sorry you're feeling this way. Honestly, you will find a party vibe in all colleges including th e'traditional' ones like Castle. It's a university student accommodation afterall and most of the people around this age tend to gravitate towards partying. However, that doesn't mean that you won't find any peace and quiet or that everyone will be into partying. Neither I, nor any of my friends, are much into clubbing. Of course, I've been a few times for the experience but I soon realised that it wasn't for me and I found people who felt the same. You can meet these sorts of people in different places from societies to extracurriculars to your course, college and even other colleges. Plus the person above has given some great advice- there are many places in Durham where you can go for a quiet walk and sit and read a book. The Observatory Hill, Botanic Gardens, Old Durham Gardens and the Racecourse Riverside are all great places for this. The local area outside of Durham is also worth exploring- from the historic Ushaw Library to the Bishop Auckland Castle.
