The Student Room Group

Undergraduate Loan Eligibility

I am completing my A levels this year and plan to start university this September. I am an Indian national. have been living in the UK continuously since September 2017 and lived here for almost three years before that under a dependent visa. However, I had a break in my stay from 2015 to 2017. Because of this break, my student loan application was rejected on the grounds that I haven't lived in the UK continuously for at least half of my life, even though cumulatively, I have spent more than half my life in the UK.

I don't meet any of the other eligibility criteria outlined on gov.uk. I completed most of my schooling in the UK, and my parents are regular taxpayers. I am committed to staying in the UK, but without the student loan, I will not be able to attend university. I am uncertain if it is worth appealing this decision. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there,

What's your current status in the UK? What's your parents status in the UK? How old are you and when did you enter the UK?

Thanks, Ross

Thanks for confirming Sarvesh.

You'd need to of been in the UK for at least half your life without a break in residency. If you've had a break in residency then you would be ineligible unfortunately.

Thanks, Ross
