S5 subjects

Hello. I am currently in S4 and i am choosing my subjects for S5. This year in s4 i do biology, chemistry, computing, accounts, modern studies, english and maths. All at national 5 level. In maths i do national 5 applications of maths. I looked on the glasgow university website and I don't think they accept national 5 applications of maths as a replacement for national 5 maths aswell as higher applications of maths as a replacement for higher maths (correct me if im wrong) so I would like to go into medicine but I don't know if I should go down the route of taking national 5 maths at higher so then I can do my higher maths in S6 or should i just drop maths in S5 and crash higher physics. Im really confused and uncertain on what I should do. For higher i am picking higher biology, chemistry, computing, english and either national 5 maths or crash higher physics. So can you please suggest what should I do as i really want to go into medicine! Thank you

Or I can crash higher maths but I haven't done national 5 maths only apps but if I put in the work can either higher maths or physics help me understand?

Hi there,

From the University website, the entry requirements for our undergraduate medicine course is all follows:

SQA Higher Entry Requirements (by end of S6)
AAAAB Higher at end of S5 + BB Advanced Higher
Additional requirements: Higher Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics. National 5 English at grade B. UCAT. Interview.

To break this down this means that:

At the end of S4 you will have to have achieved a B in English.

At the end of S5 you will have to have achieved 5 Highers at grades AAAAB. This means that if you were to go with the subjects you took for S4, you would have to take Higher Chemistry, Higher Biology and Higher Physics, as well as two other Highers of your choice you feel you could achieve the right grades in. I don't believe it would be possible to do Higher Maths without having done National 5, but you can always discuss this with a teacher.

At the end of S6 you will have to have achieved BB at Advanced Higher (preferably in related subjects i.e chemistry and biology).

I would recommend talking to your teachers or career advisor about your decisions, and whether doing a crash higher in Physics or Maths would be possible. If you don't think you'll be able to achieve the AAAAB at the end of S5 in Chemistry, Biology and Physics OR Maths I would recommend looking into other avenues of entry into medicine, like biomedical degree courses!

You can find more information about our school of medicine on the website:

Hope this is helpful and best of luck with your decision!
