Euros 2024 Thread

We may as well start an official Euros thread now that the domestic season is over. There are still all the cup finals but only a few teams involved.

Southgate has announced his initial squad:

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).

Forwards: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

Weak defence, very weak actually.

Even worse manager.

England SF at best. Winner I'm going with Germany as an outside bet, theyll surprise a few.

The fact that there isn't a good alternative to Harry Maguire tells you everything.. injuries have caused an issue at LB. No natural partner for Rice in midfield.

Although the attack looks stacked for once..

Ben White sitting at home (or much more likely Dubai, Vegas, Ibiza) , probably the best English defender this season....

says it all

Yes the attack is stacked but balanced teams tend to do well at national tounraments.I think its near impossible to win with that defence. And manager, my god hes horrificly over promoted.

I guess occasionally there will be personality issues. Don't think it was direct with Southgate but one of his staff. He probably thought at the time that there's Walker, Tripper, Trent, Reece James so Ben White won't matter.

Southgate should play this team:

.......................Kane......................
Gordon.........Foden............Saka
..........Bellingham..Rice............
Gomez...Stones..Walker..Trent
.................Pickford....................

Mainly that defence to avoid picking Maguire but if you stick him in then you drop Trent and move Walker to RB. Maybe better choices than Gomez at LB but with Shaw and Chilwell injured it's going to be a forced option. Gordon not the best attacking player but I think he would suit the position/formation rather than trying to shoe-horn in a Maddison or Cole Palmer in wrong position. Bellingham would be more suited to #10 but not many good midfield partners for Rice.

Depends if Rice is going to be #6 or #4. He's done well this season as a #6 but obviously can play #4 too. Probably Bellingham needs someone to sit back a bit as hes basically a forward who can play #6 but has been playing #10 afaik for RM.

I'd go with

Kane
Foden Bellingham Saka
Rice Gallagher
Shaw*/Gomez Stones Maguire TAA
Pickford

It's a team that's severely unbalanced and I think the likes of Gallagher adds a bit more stability to the midfield. Thats a attack that can play pretty tactical too, not the pritiest style or anything but as a unit might function. Kane/Bellingham/Foden/Saka will score goals but its just a matter of putting a base behind them that sort of sits and Rice/Gallagher does that well. I think having Bellgingham in CM is going to open up the defence to counters and they need all the help they can get
Defence is awful, no way of dressing that up tbh

Winners Portugal or France . I think England will only make it to the Quarters finals. Finishing as Group Winners they’d have tough run in to final facing one of Austria, Romania or Turkey in Round of 16. Then you have Italy in the Quarter Final, France in the Semi Final and Spain in the Final no chance.

Dropped from original 33-man shortlist: James Trafford (Burnley, goalkeeper), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton, defender), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool, defender), Harry Maguire (Manchester United, defender), Curtis Jones (Liverpool, midfielder), Jack Grealish (Manchester City, forward), James Maddison (Tottenham, forward).

Some big calls from Southgate! Has he got them right?

Goalkeepers was a no brainer really hope Dean Henderson pushes Jordan Pickford for the number one shirt. Dunk and Konsa over Branthwaite and Maguire huge gamble losing experience an unfit Luke Shaw missed the second half of the season yet proved his fitness same could have been said for Maguire. Wharton over Maddison is criminal. Same goes Gordon for Grealish. Ivan Toney the same as well don’t remember him scoring once ever since he came back from that ban.

Madders + Branthwaite > Guehi + Wharton

Gordon is really good. He is more direct than grealish, but the only downside is experience. I'd sacrifice experience for a player like Gordon
Calling the shots that England won’t win but hopefully I’ll be proven wrong. I’d like to see England or France win however.

Good solid 1-0 loss to Iceland (ranked 77th) in the final friendly before the tournament!

I would not bet on England so much. The three lions are teethless, as usual. World class individual players don't mean a world class team.

With Southgate the possibility of winning the cup is almost zero. His record against the top teams is poor.

Shh can’t speak these facts to the fans.

Nah on a serious note, it would be nice is England won but I think that I’ll support France (when it comes to the men’s) and England (when it comes to the women’s).

I’d like to be proven wrong though.

I would hate for the England team to win anything. If you have ever been around hard-core England fans, you would get what I mean. Every tournament, they sing "it's coming home" and get all drunk and when they don't win, they somehow blame it on one particular player and absolutely demolish them. If England won though, you would never hear the end of it and for the next 68 years, all you would hear is "remember when we won it in 2024?" I just can't have that. That is why against Italy, I was rooting for Italy when my whole family was going for England.

Yes the football fans ruin it to the point where other countries have complained about this (when said fans go abroad).
