Academic misconduct caught twice

Hi, I’ve got a second meeting over academic misconduct on one specific assignment for the second time. The first time I admitted that I used AI to help and admitted and took my consequences on the chin. But the second time now I’ve been accused again but I did not use AI. My referencing was very poor and I missed out 1/2 in text citations. It now says I have a meeting with the academic misconduct panel, what do I do?

Consult the published student conduct/assessment malpractice policies for your Uni. This is so you understand the penalty for a 2nd instance of plagiarism and how you can prepare for the meeting.

Engage your student union/student representatives to support you. Sometimes they have an academic support officer with experience of disciplinary meetings.

Hi there,

I would agree that you should contact your student union reps to help support you with the meeting. Talking to people who have experience of these types of meetings should help you too.

Again, I agree that looking into the rules for academic misconduct so you can see if you have actually done something that you weren't supposed to do without realising it. Or, to know that you haven't done anything wrong which you can explain in the meeting. It Willa also prepare you for the consequences should they find that you have plagiarised/ used AI.

Good luck with the meeting,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Yes, support and research is very necessary. Each institution will operate very differently., according to their individual policies and guidance.

In my organisation (a college), all academic malpractice was considered at the highest stage (Level 3) and the student received a FINAL written warning.

If a student was dumb enough to do it again, and the allegation of a second instance of plagiarism was proven, they were automatically expelled.

This meant that we withdrew the student. As many of our course intake were International students, their student visa was cancelled and they were expelled from their halls of residence.

As others have said talk to the SU they will be able to help. You'll need to convince them you made a mistake but given this is the second time you have had a hearing like this your looking at quite a severe punishment if they find against you. 1/2 of missing in text citations is quite serious we were told even unintentional plagiarism could result in getting expelled (at the course introduction.). I suspect getting a zero for the unit is probably the best you could hope for, but (and I'm not going to sugar coat it because that's not fair to you) there is a very real possibility you could be expelled so try and prepare for that kind of a plan b if you like.

Definitely make use of your student union as there are not connected to the university. Was there any support put in place for your first meeting? Perhaps to attend a workshop or any specific class or a one-to-one with your academic coach?

Yeah your done being given a chance to redo the assignment should have taught you that your references need to be top notch it’s time to start looking at other options.
