Do any universities offer a computer science degree without A level maths?

I want to do medicine, but computer science is also a good option for me. I'm doing biology and chemistry, and probably geography. I'd rather not do maths for my 3rd A level as it isn't really a subject I enjoy. Are there any universities that offer a computer science degree without A level maths? Could I get accepted into a course for computer science with biology, chemistry and geography?

Thanks

If you don’t enjoy high school mathematics I would strongly reconsider applying for STEM at university, advanced maths is a fundamental tool that you’ll be using every day at university and potentially in your entire career.
Thanks for the response. I understand what you are saying, I wouldn't mind doing A level maths, its just that I would prefer to not do it at A level: so I just wanted to confirm if there is any way I could do computer science without A level maths

You could avoid A-level mathematics probably by undertaking a “foundation year” however you would then just add on one more year to the length of your degree and the foundation year would cover a significant amount of the mathematical content in A-level maths (and potentially further maths).

Tools like calculus, linear algebra, complex numbers, trig & building complex multi variable functions will become basic tools you’ll be expected to apply on a day to day basis in your degree and if you get a job in STEM potentially onwards. Maths is really the language of science (& objective driven problem solving).

Lancaster is a good option that doesn't require A level maths (I believe you'll need a 6 in your Maths GCSE though).

Hi @School_Student99, Coventry University Student Ambassador here! 👋

I also wasn't a fan of Maths but wanted to pursue Computer Science! This was something I began to be concerned about after looking at many universities requiring at least Maths as an A-level. However, Coventry University not only has a great course set up for Computer Science, but the entry requirements don't specifically require a Maths subject. The entry requirements are:

Computer Science BSc and Software Engineering BSc:

A-Level: BBB to include one from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Computer Science, Computing, or Design Technology. Excludes General Studies.

BTEC: DMM in IT or a technical subject.

I ended up choosing Software Engineering BSc, which has the same entry requirements and first-year modules as Computer Science. There were also opportunities to switch to the other course depending on my interests. So yes, there are universities that don't rely heavily on mathematics. Coventry University's Computer Science and Software Engineering courses introduce mathematics as a module that provides all the mathematical knowledge you need for the course, regardless of your background in maths.
This was great for me as I could brush up on my maths skills and focus on what was needed for my course without it being a strict requirement to get in!

If you're unsure, I highly recommend visiting us at our Open Days. You can talk to us ambassadors, lecturers, and supporting staff, as well as get a feel for student life in our Environment, Engineering, and Science department. Check out our next available date here! Hope this helps 😊

Hi, I also have planned to do computer science but many Computer Science courses do require an A level in Maths and one science subject. I have chosen Physics, Maths, and Computer Science as my subjects for A level. Many Universities expect you to pass GCSE Maths with at least a Grade C, and they often suggest having A Levels in Maths or Computing.
But, if you don't meet these standards, some universities might offer a special first year called a Foundation Year. This will allow you to study Computer Science without needing the usual qualifications.

Hello, someone I know did Religious Studies, Psychology and Biology during COVID and got into Computer Science at Greenwich University in London without A-Level Mathematics, so it's certainly possible!

Off the top of my head I believe Cardiff doesn't require A-level Maths, but I do think they require A-level CS.

Equally, plenty of strong CS departments offer the course with a foundation year for people with good grades who didn't do maths, e.g. Southampton, Birmingham, Manchester etc.

That said I think the major concern here is you've said "maths...isn't really a subject I enjoy" but want to do CS. Computer science is a fundamentally mathematical degree. It's not a degree in programming, it's a degree in the science of computers and computation, and that is inherently mathematical.

I'm not sure how you can square not liking maths with wanting to do a CS degree. If your primary motivation is programming, then I'd suggest (degree) apprenticeship options where you can just learn to be a code monkey directly (since that's not what a CS degree is aiming to teach you regardless).

Hi,

I'm a 2nd year Computer Science student at Lancaster and we do not require Maths at A-level or any specific A-level subjects that matter!

Our entry requirements are as follows:

A-level: AAB

GCSE: Maths grade B / 6 and English Language grade C / 4

In first year everyone on the 4 degrees offered (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cyber Security and Data Science) will study the 4 core modules and then if you study Data Science you will take a maths module, otherwise you will take a minor module which could be in anything from neuroscience, maths, psychology, business, marketing, economics etc. Then in second and third year each of the degrees will have their own core modules and then you will get to pick optional ones. Because of this structure, you can swap on and off any of the 4 degrees, for example, if you apply and get a place on the Computer Science course and then decide that you want to swap to Cyber Security then you can swap over (but don't worry, if you change your mind you can always swap back!) anywhere up until the start of second year!

As we do not require either Maths or Computer Science at A-level, the course is taught from the perspective that Computer Science is a new subject to everyone (this is why first year is the same to get the foundations built and everyone up to the same level) and any maths needed is taught but we also have something called MASH MASH (Maths and Stats Hub) | ASK - Lancaster University and the FAST Hub should you need further assistance with it!

We have open days in September and October and here's the link should you wish to visit, meet the academics and students and get an idea and a feel for us: Undergraduate Open Days - Lancaster University

If there is any other information regarding the course or Lancaster University please don't hesitate to ask!

Hope this helps and reassures you, Ella - Lancaster University Student Ambassador

Hi, I've just finished CS at Uni of Plymouth and didn't do A-Level maths, there was some maths in one module in first year but it wasn't too difficult or too much. Highly recommend!

Hi @School_Student99

Great that you're considering how your A-level options might impact what you study at university. It sounds like you would be a strong candidate with you A-level subjects regardless of whether you choose A-level math, many universities offer courses that don't require A-level math as a pre-requisite. We offer BSc (Hons) Computer Science & Business that does not require A-level math to study with us.

I hope that helps with your decision and good luck with you A-levels!
