Do I still have a chance?

I know it’s too early to tell, but do still have a chance at getting into a russel group with these gcse grades (this is what I think will most probably be my results):

Biology - 6
Chemistry - 7
English language - 8
English literature - 7
French - 4
History - 7
Maths - 7
Music -7
Physics - 9
Religious studies - 6

I’m going to do physics, chem, maths and probs an epq or other stem as level
Do you have any idea of what you’d like to study at uni? I would say that those grades are really good, only way it might interfere w getting into a Russell group would be if you’re wanting to do med/dentistry which are already known for being v competitive even down to GCSE’s (still don’t think it would be a problem at all tho so don’t worry). For example, Uni of Manchester is v strict on GCSE’s and ask for at least 7 over grade 7 for medicine which i’m just using as an example and those results would be fine. It varies a lot between diff unis in the Russell group as they all prioritize different things and some care less about GCSE results. Research entry requirements on their page for the course you’re interested in and don’t stress because those would be great grades.

Thanks 🙂 I’d like to study astronomy/ astrophysics/ planetary sciences but generally just something in the space field

Oh okay, that sounds really interesting! For those courses at UCL for example you’re only expected to have English Lang and Maths at a grade 4, so don’t worry about not having a chance at those uni’s because of GCSE’s. Most places really don’t care for those grades except passes unless the course is super competitive.

Your GCSE’s literally do not matter when applying to uni, sure they matter if you’re applying to oxbridge or a similarly ranked uni, but most Russel groups won’t care as long as you meet the basic requirements (like a 5 in maths and English) as well as maybe a high grade in the subject you’re applying for

Hi @lim3_sk ,

Most Universities don't mind too much what you get in your GCSE's, as long as you have passed maths and English. As you are looking into doing a course which would require you to have good maths knowledge, a good grade in this would probably help you but mostly they just focus on your A-level results.

If you were looking to go to Oxford or Cambridge, they may look closer at GCSE results just because of how competitive the courses are and how many people apply for them, but other Russel group universities should not require better grades than the ones you have!

With the A-Levels you have said you are doing, if you do well in these this will matter a lot more than your GCSE's. Your GCSE grades look great though, especially physics which is important for your course so it will look good that you have these grades!

I hope this helps an good luck with your A-levels!
