Van Mildert College

Hi, my son has been allocated to Van Mildert. He's relatively quiet, not a drinker and not into clubbing. We've heard it is more of a party college and that is causing concerns and fears he could become isolated - could anyone put our minds at rest about this or are we right to worry?

Hiya,

As someone who is also not a drinker/not into clubbing and quite introverted and was allocated a party college, I can say that there's no need to worry about isolation. Generally, during freshers and after, colleges put on a range of different activities (drinking and non-drinking) for students to get together and socialise. I was invited out to clubs/bars during freshers even though I don't drink and it was completely fine (+nobody made feel isolated whatsoever) and I still enjoyed meeting everyone and socialising, but I also had the chance to attend other relaxed non drinking events like a movie night and pizza night which was amazing 🙂

Also, there are so many activities/events to get involved with outside of college that are also non-drinking, so don't worry! 🙂
No alcohol, no problem The Durham Student

I included a link to a blog written by one of our students about their experience with not drinking at University and what its like to give a bit more insight 🙂

I hope this can help and Best of Luck to your son!

Hey there! I’ve been allocated to van mildert too and am not as much of a drinker. I spoke to a student on Unibuddy who told me she personally found there were plenty of people who did other activities- especially socials, there’s a lot at Mildert. And so it wasn’t too difficult to make connections even without the drinking and clubbing. Hope this helps!
