Daily Commute

Hello, I am a student's guardian and looking at student accommodation in Glasgow. Looking at locations, cost, surrounding areas etc and wondered how long typically students spend commuting to University. All replies would be useful. Thank you, Louise

Hey @louisewightman 😀 Which university is it they're commuting to?

I'd say students do a mix of things for commuting so it depends. Some will live near-ish their campus and walk to uni, some will use the subway (connects the city centre with the West End and South Side) and others will commute via train or bus. If they're under 22 they'll qualify for free bus travel across all of Scotland (not just Glasgow) so that's a good way to keep costs down.

This webpage was put together by our Students Union and might be useful too. Even if it's not Strathclyde the student is going to - it gives some general Glasgow info and there's transport information there too. The House hunting starter guide pdf is helpful.

Let me know which uni they'd be based at and what neighbourhoods you've already explored and I can try help with piecing together some local info? Happy to help 🚂

Hi there,

If they're looking at University of Glasgow, all of our undergraduate student accommodation is within a 10-30 minute walk of our main campus, you can check exact locations and commutes on our residence profiles on our website: University of Glasgow - Undergraduate study - Undergraduate accommodation - Residence profiles

Many people also choose to stay in accommodation in the centre of Glasgow, in some of the private halls or studio apartment options. It's then really easy to get to the University by bus or subway, with our nearest subway station being Hillhead, and multiple bus routes in and out of the centre from the campus.

In general, the public transport links across Glasgow are really good, and you can get free bus travel and discounted subway tickets with a YoungScot National Entitlement Card if you are under 22.

Most students who live within Glasgow probably spend anything between 5-30 mins on their commute, whether this is walking or public transport, but it also worth noting we have a number of home students who will travel via train from surrounding towns, and therefore spend longer on their commute.

Hope this helps!
