jaw problems and treatment ??

has anyone ever had any issues with their jaw that have needed treatment? i'm in the process of getting my messed up jaw sorted and i'm nervous

i had an mri not long ago and they told my i have a slipped disc and a couple of other issues on the jaw

does anyone know how this is treated? i'm worried and borderline anxious that it will need something that will cause me to miss school... i'm in year 12 currently trying to apply for dentistry (ironic i know) so i need to do well in my a-levels and the ucat this summer which is why i'm even more anxious

if anyone knows of someone or has had issues like this before and knows what the normal treatment process is please let me know :frown:

at the very least i can mention it in my person statement lol

yh ive had some problems with my jaw, but theyve flared up specifically nearing exam time- ig its my way of handling the stress since i dont really let it out in any other way. I saw my orthodontist and they said its pretty normal amongst kids our age(I'm in Year 11). make sure you find a way to reduce exam stress as that might make you clench and or grind your teeth at night which defo wont help. from your message you seem to be pretty serious about your studies. Good luck with your exams tho

from what the maxfax surgeon i saw who reviewed my mri mine is quite serious :frown:

i have to go see a specialist surgeon in the city near me and they'll advise me what the best treatment is ofc but until i have that appointment i'm just sat waiting and struggling 😭

i've had these issues with my jaw for two years now and the nhs is so slow that it's just been getting worse and worse each time i've been put on a waiting list... we (my mum and i) practically had to beg to get this mri because all they would do was an x-ray and they gave me a bite guard and stuff but now that i finally got this mri they can see the serious extent of the damage my tmj has :/
Can I ask what are the symptoms of tmj like for you? I’m a y12 student and I don’t have any diagnosed condition but for past two years ish he never I’m ill or stressed or somethings not even that I can get jaw pain, normally related to sinus pain too. It’s been awful past few days (exams are so nice lol) but I don’t grind my teeth from my awareness but my jaw can get tense or do that cracking sound really easily and muscles and stuff all ache around. I’m asking cause I genuinely research tmj this morning and then this suddenly popped up as a recommendation. Ik you’re not a doctor, but I was wondering how it feels for you so I can determine whether it’s google misleading me or not 😂 still I should probably get it checked out

As a hopeful med applicant having to do UCAT too soon I hope it gets better for you, but perhaps if there is need for anything serious you can consult your doctor asap to see recovery time and when it’s be and book your ucat around it?

for me the symptoms started off as clicking and almost like a 'jittery' movement of my jaw, it wasn't opening and closing smoothly. then it started with pain just in front of my ears right where the joint is. the pain could spread to my teeth and up my temples and it would be accompanied by a tight feeling in my jaw. then after a while the clicking stopped, i learnt this was actually meaning the condition of my jaw was getting worse lol and the pain continued. i struggled to chew and yawning was VERY painful (which doesn't help when you have insomnia already and are always tired...).
occasionally when i yawned my jaw would open further than the limited range of movement and would hurt like hell then click back into place how it was before

if you have any symptoms like this i recommend going to see your dentist ASAP because it can get worse very quickly. some people who experience the clicking even wake up with a locked jaw spontaneously. :frown: not a very nice thing to be dealing with given it affects your eating and talking.

for me, i was told i'm going to be sent an appointment date to speak to the specialist surgeon but i don't know when this will be yet 😖

good luck with the ucat and application process and i hope you manage to get your jaw sorted
